I've received a letter today informing me of major road improvements that are due to commence on the Newport Road for 20 weeks

The work will include:-

- Improving the worn out road and footpatchs between Bridge Street and Castle Way. This will include the junctions of Friars Road, Station Road and Castle Way;
- Upgrading the existing signals at the junction of Station Road;
- Creating a shared cycle route and upgrading the existing pedestrian crossing between Castlefields and Kingsway
- Drainage improvements at the Brunswick Terrace junction
- Working with Tesco to improve the junction into their store by creating a new right turn lane to improve the flow and increasing pedestrian safety with pedestrian routes and crossing paths

The Tesco junction improvement is being done and paid for in full by Tesco as a condition of their planning consent

Phase 1 (Bridge Street to Tesco, footpath and road resurfacing) starts on Monday 24th May to end of June
Phase 2 (Tesco to Castle Way resurfacing) starts July to early October

My thoughts:

1. About bloody time

2. Great, major disruption to my life..... (although I suppose at least its school holidays soon so should limit tailbacks slightly).

Today is 24th May. Has any work started yet?

I've got to drive down the Newport Road later so just wondering whether there are any traffic problems?

Yes it has! No major disruptions though. A firend of mine works for the highways and he says that there is going to be access both ways most of the way through the work so it shouldnt be too bad. Obviously he's biased. But thats more promising than nothing.

Have driven down there today and didn't get held up at all which was good. Hopefully it will remain like that!

There's now a random assortment of cones and roadsigns around the Castlefields roundabout, forcing all traffic into one lane going out of town and also coming off Castlefields. I'm not sure why, but I'm assuming they are going to start doing some work soon.

Now, now, Basil. I was purely trying to make an update of a very dull situation remotely interesting to read. Let me try again:

In the last few days, contractors acting on behalf of Staffordshire County Council Highways Department have placed traffic cones and the necessary information signs around the roundabout forming the junction between Kingsway and the Newport Road, as per the guidelines issued by the Highways Agency. It can be assumed that this recent activity is indicative of the road layouts to be expected for imminent road improvement works currenty being carried out on the A518 Newport Road between Bridge Street and Castle Way.

They were working last night, as people were turning round in Tesco and annoying me, and again tonight as I staggered home from the golf club.
