The metal railings weren't part of the original installation if that helps.

Yes and the latticed metal work is part of the platform.

No it was made for a specific purpose.

It says that it is a Boulton & Paul product, made in Norwich.

The reason it is there is because the platform length was extended but nothing to do with a bridge structure.

Nothing to do with any signalling although this may have been interlocked to the signalling system back in the days when it was in use.

The opposite end to the bolt is curved, implying the a horizontal swing is/was possible.

A transient foot crossing to the opposite platform?

Well done @Glam and @Gramaisc both correct. How did you find the location?

Apparently there was also a passenger width section that was pushed out manually by station staff to allow pedestrians to cross before the vehicle "gates" were opened.
