.. in 1919, Mustafa Kemal set about re-establishing Turkey from the territories occupied by the Western Allies, after the First World War, resulting in the founding of the modern secular state. On the way he changed the alphabet, the calendar and everybody's name, but nobody seemed to mind much..

As he wasn't sure what his birthday really was, he thought that it might as well be May 19th.

..in 1927, Charles Lindbergh landed in Paris after the first non-stop solo trans-Atlantic flight.

There seems to have been no problem with volcanic ash at the time..

Tad gorn to Wolverhampton but has been back ever since, gawd bless the Queen.

Have also read that the Cappers Act of 1571 was reissued as a result of the Cappers of Stafford moaning most effectively but am unable to verify with online sources.

The Fellowship and Company of Cappers had successfully brought about the Act of 1571 on the basis that 8,000 people in London alone, and many more in 26 named towns of which Stafford was one, were employed in the manufacture of woollen caps.

If that isn't a good enough reason to make it a legal requirement for everyone over the age of six to wear a woollen cap made of English wool on every Sunday and holy day throughout the land, then frankly i don't know what is.
