One for the girls

I am not a shopper, not really interested in spending money on clothes that could be spent on house/garden/holidays.

Am no more likely to spend £500 on a handbag than fly to the moon.

But I do like to look nice. And because of husband job, have to attend certain functions and look the part.

Problem is, have now got to go to a bit of a do in London (dressy uppy) and I have gone up a dress size. EEK

All my long dresses no longer fit and there is no way that I am going to starve myself to get in them.

I am what Iam. (cue entrance by Gloria Gaynor)

So girls...

where to go to get a lovely gown?

have you tried a website called light in a box ( I think?)

I had a brief look and they look lovely but past experience has shown me that pictures dont always tell a true story.

Help please.

Hi Carole
I have heard things about Light in the box - firstly they are in China, secondly they make the dresses themselves to order, thirdly people I know who have ordered from them either weren't happy with the quality or had to wait an absolute age for them to arrive.
As you obviously don't mind ordering online what about John Lewis or House of Fraser. Or in Stafford - Barbara Powell, or the new Stafford department store is opening on Friday, maybe they will have an evening gown department?

Thank you.

I knew nothing about them and did not know if they were reputable.

I don't really like ordering on line as a rule and prefer to try on.

Think a visit to Birmingham might be in order.

I don't mind buying online for everyday clothing but I think it's important to try evening gowns as the more fitted styles can come up small. enjoy your shopping day :)

Fashion Factory in Cannock used to sell evening wear, but I haven't been for a while so not sure of what would be available....& Debenhams in Hanley could be worth a shot.

Or you could hire...try promdress.co.uk there's a list of evening wear hire that's local to Stafford...

I have never found anything in tk max, I can't be bothered to root through the tat to find the hidden gem.

I suppose I could try Barbara Powell.

I love debenhams but last time I looked they only had dreary colours and designs but I will have another look when I go to Birmingham next week.

I bought something from Roma once, new with the tag still on. Wore it once but knew I wouldn't wear it again so I took it back and re sold it.

(the advert at the bottom of my page is Light in the box lol.....keeps tempting me with pictures of long dresses)

Is Roma still open on Foregate Street?? I bought a great evening dress from there. It was as new and only cost me £30.00 but full value was over £300 when new.

I know they are closing soon due to ill health but defo worth a try if still open

It's actually Mrs tek-monkey, unless there's been some changes that I'm unaware of...

I just noticed that the other wedding shop there, near the Four Crosses, is offering a "massive sample sale" on Saturday - possibly they're going out on the town on Friday night..?

It is indeed my other half :)

She does focus on bridal, but does prom dresses too. Drop in and say hello if you are after something, she can order quite a range of stuff in that she doesn't have room to display.

Mrs Wildwood called in earlier today to find a dress for a wedding we are going to next weekend. She was most impressed and calling back Friday to complete the purchase.

Jades always going to have the best ideas...

Sadly I've never found a dress that didn't make me look 'slutty' :(
I meant our Mrs Jade-clothings shop! I used walk past thinking how 'glam' it all looked on the rails.
I don't own a dress or skirt, perhaps it's time I did, might look human for once. I'd need suitable footwear tho, I walk like Hilda Baker in high heels, flip flops are no go, I have seriously manky toe nails, comes of always being covered up in sensible flatties n socks for 12hrs at a time.
