I'm curious to know what peoples thoughts are on the music industry and the quality of albums currently being released by artists. Do you think there's something missing from music today? We are in quite an exciting time, technologically speaking, but are people becoming less creative and more obsessed with trends? Technology make's it so easy for anyone to create music.

my main gripe with the music industry is that everything's too safe, no one's willing to take a risk. Labels, magazines, even artists only want to do what they know will not offend. where are the characters in music these days?...

Are we there yet?
A lot of popular music sound far too polished now, almost plastic... perfectly tuned vocals, nonsense lyrics and a catchy hook, and bingo

That's also one of my main gripes, and the soul reason why a lot of artists sound exactly the same even with music production. It's so grey. One thing that's disheartening is when you get an artists that could be potentially good. But some how the label seems to screw it up by not treating the artists as artists, they make the mistake of treating them more like a over designed product.

Hasn't it always been the same in "pop (in the broadest sense) music"? Good things stand out no matter what. Watch re-runs of Ready Steady Go, Old Grey Whistle Test, The Tube, The Chart Show, Electric Ballroom, Jools Holland for the last millennia You'll still notice the gems?

Surely part of the problem now is the medium being the message, sort of thing.

Albums you say? Aren't people increasingly cherry-picking only the (i) Tunes that they like?

If it isn't an instant hit, or at least perceived to be, the artist can do one - that's the issue don't you think?

Very good point. Who buys an album nowadays? We only select the "best of" tracks ?

Off the top of my head, albums that would have been shafted without instant hit appeal:
WHite Album (bar Ob-La-Di for family parties), Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, Ziggy Stardust, Stone Roses, White Blood Cells, the entire Pixies catalogue- the list goes on...

Come now - Revolution No. 9 alone would've secured it mass appeal...

The main problem is that no-ones willing to take any risks, so labels are only investing in very boring, bland, middle of the road shit, and however much self belief and hype that surrounds them these bands are lucky to still be around in 6 months time.
Difficult, if not impossible, to argue with that.

Happy 2012 Music Lovers!
