Other Peoples Pets

So...

I had a friend pop round earlier - they were only picking something up and staying for 5mins.

They had their dog in the car as they were about to embark on a walk - so I invited said dog into my home!

I thought to myself : ''What damage could this dog cause in 5mins?!''

WELL.

Despite the fact that it weighs more than me it decided to hurtle around and nearly took me out a few times.

It tore up my entire back garden - then decided to tread muddy paw prints on my new sofa!!!!!

Then as a final party piece....

It decided to diarrhea on my lawn - stand in it - and then tromp it through my kitchen.

My 'friend' seemed oblivious to all of this (see how the friendship has changed over the course of this episode?)

And just chuckled and said what a character this dog was.

Yes - a real 'character' !

Now lovely people - I ask you - is this is what to be expected when you invite other peoples pets into your home?

Am I being a Moaning Myrtle?
A Miserable Maud?
A Frowning Francine?

I have family coming over in the next few weeks - should I tell them to leave their adorable pooches at home?

To prevent what could possibly be WW3?

Moan over.

Noooo! That is totally unacceptable, if said animal has never been to your house before the owner should keep it on a lead and a dog that size should not be that obviously out of control! I suggest you ask anyone who is bringing a pooch are they going to behave? Most visiting animals don't behave that way its likely that said pooch hasn't had many visits to other people houses and was lover excited!

Irresponsible dog owner. Not the fault of the dog. His owner is the one responsible for his behaviour.

As for the family with the dogs coming over. It's your house and your rules. If you don't want their dogs in your house all you have to do is tell them.

As an owner of three dogs, I respect the rules other people put in place in their own home. If I was asked to leave my dogs at home, I would.

At least it didn't do the diahrrea on the sofa ?

I did think that you had a dog already....but ho-hum... its still very naughty of the owner to not offer to clean up!

By-the-way, have you seen the TK MAX advert where the young lady has been trampolining in the living room & is stuck in the ceiling? Everytime I see it I think of you, & I have no idea why!!!

I have to agree with you, only I expect that you were politer than I'd have been and actually bitten your lip which I wouldn't have.
Like others have said, it's the owners responsibility. If they know the dog can't behave then they should have been decent enough to decline your invite explaining why.

I wouldn't take my pet with me on a visit unless they had been invited and I certainly wouldn't let them trash someones home.

I used to have the same problem when family in laws used to visit and the dog always come that was their rule not mine! The dog was well behaved however instead of bringing the dog round the back after a wet muddy walk, they use to bring it to the front through the house to the back, as my visitors were getting on a bit, they would always say they'd forgotten. I used to find it extremely infuriating and inconsiderate, however dog is now passed on due to age, so no longer a problem. I love dogs and plan to have one when I'm not at work all day, but I think you do need to consider other people as not everyone shares the same affection and I certainly agree that kind of behaviour is the responsibility of the owner.

Omg I would have gone mad! Rubbed the owners face in the poo :-D ...but that's just me lol. I don't allow my dog in other peoples homes . But if for some reason I had to , she would be kept on a lead especially the first time

Your friend should have know better than to accept your offer of letting the mutt in. I think you have shown amazing restraint in not throwing the mutt out and strangling your friend! The next time ask your friend for their shoe and use it to scoop the poo up, the dog might never learn but your friend most certainly will. Having a mutt nothing bugs me more than other irresponsible dog owners, perhaps they need to chip the dog owners and not the dogs.
Don't know if you have a garage but you might suggest to your visitors that they put there beloved pet in there during their stay.

Thank you all - I wasn't sure if I was being the unreasonable one!

Just my 'friend' acted as this was a completely normal thing to happen!

@littleme I did have a dog for a while (it's a VERY long story) but to cut it short the dog ended up going back to it's original owner - they were doggy soul mates!
She changed her job so she had more time to spend with him - so all ended well!

!

We have a big mad dog, he'd do all of these things if allowed, but he isn't allowed. Even at our house he isn't allowed in the front room (cream carpet & sofa), and he'd deffo tramp mud and 'whatever' back in, he didn't inherit the house proud gene I'm afraid!!! So, he has to have his feet wiped with a towel on entry to the kitchen! :) He knows it, and we know it!! When I do take him to other people's houses I'm accutely aware that he's a yampy nutter and he gets restricted as required. If he poo's I clean it up, if he has the squits I chuck a bucket of discinfectant water on it, and no way would he have the freedom to tramp god knows what all over someone's sofa - he'd be kept on the lead if requried. I'm outraged just reading your story to be honest :(

I have just made a small area of the garden a kind of dog toilet area. I have put in stock proof fencing in an area near my compost bins and which is overshadowed by my 4m high hedge, its an area of about 20m*5m.
Any visiting pets will be confined to this area since I do not want dead patches of lawn, ripped up flower beds or hidden excrement for kids to trample in. I figure in a few weeks I can get the sprinklers out and let kids have fun running around, the last thing I want is tears after they tread in a turd.
