Packard Bell Laptop - only one speaker?

Hey all :) I'm hoping some computer whizz may be able to assist me ...

My dad has just bought a new laptop from Tesco - http://www.tesco.com/direct/packard...e-i3-4gb-750gb-156-display-black/215-5918.prd

After having got it home and setting it up, it appears that it only has one speaker ... Sound only comes from the left speaker. We've been scouring the Internet to find out whether this is the case but we cannot find anything.

I'm relatively new to this whole forum thing but I regularly read the posts on here and I'm hoping someone may be able to help.

Thanks in advance.

Take it back. It could b e as simple as a loose cable, but for a technician like myself to dismantle it would immediately void your warranty. If it's new, take it straight back for a refund or exchange. It's not likely to be a simple software issue, so it needs replacing either way.

EDIT - Oh, and welcome to the forum! :)

Thank you for your response wmrcomputers.

We've been considering the option of returning it for an exchange. We were just wondering whether this is standard for this particular laptop? When looking at where the speakers are situated, it looks as if there is only one speak on the left hand side (where you would expect to find the right speaker, it appears to be covered).

We have no issue returning it if it is definitely faulty, we just didn't want to look silly if it is standard.

Thanks again :)

I've never seen a modern laptop have just one speaker yet - and I wouldn't expect to. If there's definitely sound only coming from one side of the machine it's a duff 'un. I have seen one particular netbook where both speakers were right next to eachother on the underside of the machine - which is a bad design, but you could still clearly see that there were 2 speakers and hear that both worked.
If you say it looks like one is blocked off, I wouldn't rule out that the plastics (the casing) weren't properly completed before assembly. These things happen. (My mate once bought several blowtorches from Wickes and none of them would work - when he realised why, even the staff at Wickes were amazed too. The whole batch of them had a solid chunk of brass that was undrilled - they had no jet to let the gas through!!)
I myself bought a crate of beer once, and amongst it was a completely clean & dry empty can! All sealed with the ring pull intact - nothing had leaked out, it was just that nothing had ever been put in! I used to keep it in the fridge and throw it to an unsuspecting mate every now and again but then the novelty wore off :heyhey:

Thank you to everyone for their advice. It is very much appreciated.

My father should be back from work shortly, so we will head down to Tesco to exchange it for one that does work or a different model. Hopefully, as it is faulty, we will have no problem doing this.

I will let you know how we get on :)

Update:
We have been into Tesco this afternoon. They had the same model laptop on display and that also had a blocked off right speaker. Even the same laptop in a different colour was the same.

We even spoke to the "Laptop Guru" they have and he confirmed that this model is only fitted with one speaker. We can't believe that a reasonably high spec laptop has been fitted with a single speaker but it would appear so.

No way i would not put up with that ask for your money back ,it clearly says " So whether you’re watching or editing videos"
it is not fit for purpose get your money back and go look else were, or ring Packard bell to confirm it is a one speaker laptop

I'm not technical but reading the tesco write up the computer is aimed at media usage (which is stereo) they have omitted any info about the speaker, and in this day and age if the speaker system is mono it really should be pointed out at point of sale. I'd say you have a good case under the sale of goods act 'not fit for purpose' ! Go back to tesco, and ask for the manager.
