I noticed a few weeks back as I walked past KFC , that anyone driving to actually go to KFC or Pizza Hut at that time wouldn't have found a parking space on their carpark. But both stores looked devoid of customers.

Exactly...I live on the Crossings but drove up to collect lunch for the better half a week ago and struggled for a space. My worry is if they do the same on the main car park then people will clog up Ranshaw Drive (the road off the roundabout) as there are no parking restrictions...

Charging motorists to use city centres is one measure to offset the, often hidden, societal impacts of vehicle ownership. London are about to bring in ULEZ which will see everyone with a ten year old petrol car, or a four year old diesel having to pay £12.50 a day (which ticks over at midnight - great for us musicians who'll have to pay twice, especially when we all bought diesels a couple of years ago on the promise they were better for the environment & let's be honest, it's not like I would drive into London if I could possibly avoid it anyhow).

Returning to your example, Nottingham does have relatively good public transport with a tram network & good suburban rail services, making getting to your office by means other than car considerably more feasible than most places. In Stafford, on the other hand, Arriva have just changed all the bus routes so they don't go past the station

That said, in the seven or so years I worked in Stafford town centre I think I drove in twice, both times after oversleeping, & was constantly confused when colleagues who lived closer than I did would endlessly moan about the cost of parking. They were all young, healthy people who thought being expected to make a ten minute walk was outrageous.

My frustration with any of these measures based on taxation is that they inevitably hit the people who can't afford it hardest. It would be really nice if we could find a way to improve the air we all breath without making it harder for people on minimum wage harder to get to work.

Looking at the Hough car park today, they had a contractor installing a 8-10ft metal post opposite the main entry/exit. Me thinks that ANPR is coming....

Not surprised by this. The signs on the Pizza Hut side state Hough Retail Park so I am sure they will extend it to cover the main part very soon.

I think they will need to put signs up before activating the cameras.

A reliable source (MrLittleMe) says you will only get 2hrs free parking during the day. When the stores on The Hough are closed (8pm till morning) you will only get 30 minutes free parking.

I imagine it will stop the boy racers from congregating there.

*Edit, I'm guessing fines for overstaying although I don't know how much.

What amazes me with APNR is that the company who will be enforcing this will be able to ask the DVLA for my name and address if I stayed over two hours and will be given it. If I contacted the DVLA for someone's details, I would get a very sharp refusal. If I could get their details, I could then start sending invoices to those pesky people who park on the road outside my house in my parking spot.
