Police in Baswich ... 17/11

Anybody know what happened at the church or Co-op in Baswich this morning? I live down the road and when I drove out, Baswich Lane was closed for at least 30 minutes! Lots of police presence and saw a couple of fire engines!

A van or truck reversed over an elderly man on the church car park. That's pretty much all I know at the moment. Not sure if the man was killed or not, and I don't know who he is.

The air ambulance landed to take the injured person to hospital, so no doubt very serious - I hope whoever it is makes a full recovery. I saw a 4x4 pickup type vehicle being loaded on to a low loader by police who were investigating afterwards.

I was frankly amazed by some drivers who, whilst waiting to turn around on Baswich Lane whilst it was closed, did not allow the vehicles in front of them enough space to complete their manoeuvres, making it far more difficult. That extra few feet of road that you closed up would not have got you moving again any more quickly...

I find that the drivers around Baswich are very ignorant so this does not surprise me one bit. I hope the pedestrian recovers.

I think Yalla you'll find that the majority of drivers around Baswich aren't actually from Baswich! Unfortunately Baswich Lane has become the recognised short cut from and to many other areas around Stafford and beyond, the speed of cars travelling along Baswich Lane is unbelievable. My parents live opposite the shops and trying to cross over the road has now become a death trap, when I go to collect my son in the evening after work the rudeness of other drivers towards people living in the area is unbelievable, they won't let you out onto Baswich Lane and if you're heading in the opposite direction of all the traffic around the bridges and bends then you've got no chance, i've sat at St Thomas Bridge for well over 10 minutes whilst all the cars keep coming over, no one lets you through.

I understand we now live in a society which has many more people and cars on the road, but people need to understand that Baswich and the surrounding area in essentially a residential area with families and small children and a bit of thought should be put into how people are driving in the area and the same goes for any other area in Stafford.

This was unfortunately an accident waiting to happen, about time we got some speed cameras on Baswich Lane!

the vehicle I saw on a trailer had a rear window was completely obscured by road dirt

Yes, it was, but it was a 4x4 pickup with one of those boxes over the back of the load area, so not sure how much visibility the driver would have at the rear to be honest even if it was clean. I know from being in a similar type of vehicle that depending on the back box, there is no visibility, making drivers dependent on mirrors / parking sensors if fitted.

I think speed cameras on Baswich Lane would be a good thing, given the speed some people travel on there at, but this was presumably a low speed accident given that it was in the car park / Co-op access road area?

Has anyone heard how the injured person is?

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
The 4x4 pick up was reversing on the Church car park, hit the pedestrian and trapped the person under the vehicle. The pedestrian is now stable in hospital.

Police closed Baswich Lane from Balmoral Road down to Danta Way with vehicles positioned across the road and also positioned a vehicle blocking the road next to Farmdown Road. Traffic was diverted via Balmoral Road, Mayfield Road, Farmdown Road, Fairfield Way and Danta Way to bypass the road closure.

I saw the Air Ambulance land somewhere around Saxon Fields (but never saw it take off again *confused*), I also saw an ambulance, a paramedic car, a doctors car and four Police cars all in attendance.

And I also witnessed an idiotic woman in a Vauxhall Tigra ignore the Police car parked across the road at Farmdown Road complete with blue flashing lights, drive up the pavement to try and drive down Baswich Lane. A Police Officer soon stopped her and asked her why she ignored the police car blocking the road and she replied "I thought it was broken down". Yeah that's right, broken down vehicles do have blue flashing lights on them and a big red POLICE sign in the back window!

I'm pleased the pedestrian is stable. That church car park seriously needs something doing about it, but apparently it's not owned by anyone, the church and co-op state they don't own it and it's not owned by the council, so nobody will take responsibility for it.

Ditto, I'm pleased to hear the pedestrian is stable. My understanding is that it is the access road to the shop / flats that nobody knows who has ownership, I thought that the car park was owned by the Church / Community Hall?

I don't know for sure, but when my mum has spoken to the ladies working in the co-op about if they are ever going to re-surface the car park because it's so dangerous to walk over in the dark at night they have always said the church don't own it, who knows!!

Anybody heard if the person knocked down is okay?
The church car park is a mess ... better to risk walking in dog muck on the grass than risk a twisted ankle going across the car park - especially in the dark (5pm)!
