Pretty Building at the Asda end of Eastgate Street

One of my favorite, if slightly decrepit, building in Stafford is being done up - looks like someone is finally showing it some love.

It's the one with the small tower next to the RAC windscreen repair shop at the very edge of Eastgate street.

Does anyone have any idea what it might be / any thoughts on what it should be?? I've always thought it would make a lovely restaurant.

I only noticed it for the first time this year, when I went to inspect Eric's new guitar shop. It really would be excellent as an Indian restaurant, in particular...

I think trading standards or weights and measure as they once were called occupied the place or a while, and man many years ago it was the town's register office....

I ♥ cryptic crosswords
I remember it as the Weights and Measures department - chaps going out to collect milk at all hours of the day

Pre Thatcher of course...

Milk and Thatcher in the same post?

I fear a tek-monkey relapse - let's hope he's busy with his sheet of A3.

I think I recall that this was bought by Freddy Sandy some time ago with the intention of turning it into some form of Performing Arts Centre.

I could well be very wrong, if so, many apologies to him.

That could work, it's across the road from encore, the performing arts section of the council...

Does it suffer from flooding down that end of town? It has a large cellar with a ramp which could provide access for parking. I always thought it could make a couple of decent apartments.

My man on the ground (i.e. my Dad who works a couple of doors away) tells me that Freddy Sandy sold it to Simmonds some time ago, and they are turning it into offices, and it may or may not have a bar below.

I accosted a workman there today and he said the final use was still not determined, office space or apartments.

The work looked to be of quite a high standard so far.
