Quality plasterer needed

Hi

Can anyone recommend a really good reliable plasterer that isn't booked up til next year please? I have a couple of jobs, 1 involves removing all the plaster from an external wall and installing (?) some decent insulated plaster board (I think this involves attaching metal bars to the brick first) and then skimming. Basically I can no longer cope with the condensation induced mould on this very cold wall.

The second is the removal of some plaster on my chimney breat that has been damaged by moisture from inside the chimney. The chimneys have now been maintained and the mushroom thing put on the pots to stop the rain going down, so now I need the plaster repaired.

If anyone knows a good plasterer please let me know :) Thanks

I think that's the point.. A good plasterer is booked up til next year

So maybe book him/her and wait

But

I do hope you find someone and share

Good luck

I'd recommend either the Sun Inn or the Holly Bush as I regularly get plastered there.

The only actual plasterer I know is booked up for ages because he's good. Anyone who can fit you in in a couple of weeks is likely to have issues so tread carefully.

As far as quality of finish Steve Tonks is the best I've seen. But I would imagine you won't get him anytime soon.

From your post is looks like you may need some sort of membrane or a tanking system installed before you do any plastering

A membrane in layman's terms is like a painted on coat or like sticking on a plastic sheet to the wall to seal it before plastering
A tanking system is a special plastic sheet that lets any moisture / water run down the wall and is drained away out of the building and also seals off the wall
Personally I'd also have a layer of insulation put on top then plasterboard and skimmed over

Hope this helps

Yeah I have seen some 'builders' put up insulated plasterboard without putting a membrane up first, the results were worse then the original wall! I have seen the plastic ones but heard you get a "foil" membrane which works even better. I am no expert though.

Surely this depends on the age of the house though? We've found our internal walls have been rendered, fine for a house built from the 70s onwards, but not old houses where the bricks need to breathe. Lime plaster and limewash is the way forward for us.

What I've mentioned above tends to be on older property and normally applies to the exterior 4 walls not Internal.
Though i have come across some internal walls sitting on footings without a damp proof course were damp creeps in to the brick work.

My house was built around 1890, it's got a few damp problems which obviously could do with being sorted out in the future/when money allows. Bloke next door had some work done a while ago, where the bottom half of the plaster was removed downstairs, I have no idea what was put back on the walls, but he said it would help with the damp between our houses. (He hasn't spoken to me since, so I don't know how good a job was done)
I'll get to the question now, is this job expensive? Would it need to be this lime plaster what Lucy mentions? I don't want to get anyone in who will pretend to know what they're doing, realise I don't have a clue and try n rip me off!
I know I sound stupid, I'm not really, just not too sure what questions to ask.

We haven't got a damp course, and in theory they don't work in old houses. You can put stuff on the walls, but then the bricks soak up moisture. We did quite a lot of research about it, as most people would suggest tanking as a matter of course. We got half a wall lime plastered for £150, the problem is finding a plasterer who knows how to use it. http://www.heritage-house.org/managing-damp-in-old-buildings.html

Thank you. Given the age of the house, I think I will have ring the specialists x
