Recommendations for a tablet

I'd like to buy my mum a tablet (i anticipate the jokes lol) for her 70th birthday but an iPad is too expensive. A friend has the iPad mini but I don't think that's big enough. She loves my ipad so I know she really wants a tablet herself. She has an iPhone 4 and she loves gadgets. Has anyone got any experience with other tablets. What ideas has anyone got. Someone has said a Lexus 7. I haven't looked at that yet. I paid £399 for my iPad but we only use it for emails and browsing so I think in hindsight I should've bought something cheaper and would've been able possibly to buy one each for me my mum and nephew for the cost of my pad alone maybe lol! Thanks a lot.

If you need a 10" tablet then your choices are limited I'm afraid, as they all cost a bit. I have a nexus 7 and love it, but the screen is smaller than the ipad mini. It's also a better screen, cheaper and a faster tablet, but it's only 7".

I've found a website called buymobilephones.net where you get a free 16gb Nexus 7 if you buy a mobile phone. Its not a Lexus 7 but a Nexus 7. I think my friend who texted me the name Lexus meant nexus - or is there a nexus and lexus lol . I need to buy a phone anyway and is a Nexus 7 still a tablet where you can browse the net and do emails etc or has it got serious limitations as that seems to be too good to be true to get a free tablet. Thnx.

She may be ok with the 7" . I'm gonna get my friend to bring the ipad mini round to mum to see what she thinks as it was a few months ago when I saw it. I've only seen it once. So I think a nexus lexus could be in the running once we're clear on size. Can you Skype with a nexus?

I'm probably not the best person to ask on these matters, but I'm sure that someone who knows will be along in a bit - I last upgraded my phone in 1988.

It certainly does - it's in the hall, where all phones should be in decent people's houses, and I really just use it for the bells, although I do still ring out on it now and then - just to relive how long it took to dial a number....

Can't believe it wasn't that long ago that we had dial up internet! I think we stopped that in 2006 and my nephews can't remember it! It was soooo slow and NOISY lol.

The ipad mini is a little larger than the nexus 7 instead believe? The galaxy tab deal above looks good to me, the 'free' ones with phone deals always cost more for the phone contract than you'd usually pay.

Currently looking at phone deals for the other half, so seen a few like this.

I like the galaxy but think its too much money for her. The nexus seems the next price down. So acer attracted me as sooo much cheaper.

How about one of these http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/mobile-phones/VERSUS_TOUCHPAD_9 ?

A mate of mine bought one and its pretty reasonable to be honest, doesn't feel budget priced. Once again the price at CW is good, amazingly...

Downsides are its only 8gb, but it takes micro sd cards so that's not an issue, the processor means it won't be as lightening quick as a Nexus or Samsung (but unless you compare them back to back you probably won't notice in the real world) and I think it uses an alternative to the Android App Store but it's easy enough to sort that out.

That looks really good too. Thnx john. Not sure about 8gb as you say. Is 8gb big enough to use skype or viber? she loves facetime on iphone4.

8gb will only be an issue if she wants to download or store lots of movies on it. But even if she does, micro sd cards are very cheap and can expand that by a further 32gb

Thanks John. This looks like a real contender then doesn't it as I can't see her needing to download films etc. I must confess I don't really know what an sd card is but am sure i'll learn fast as I've come across memory cards in my digital camera so that looks good that she can get larger memory that way. I'm gonna get her a virgin media Tivo box so she'll be well catered for with films and TV options. She has virgin v+ already. She likes the on demand but sometimes needs catch up but I think the tablet will just be for FaceTime (Skype) rather than TV . My nephew does use sky go on his iPhone - I do tell him off as I'm worried about his eyes but he doesn't do it very often as he can use e desktop or his laptop. I think virgin TV are bringing something out for a tablet too but I don't think she'll need it if its available via her tv and via her desktop. I can't see her being away from home where she needs mobile tv. She uses mobile web obviously on her iPhone and the tablet will do that also. The versus is mobile data and wifi which is good - my ipad is only wifi.
