Hi
Anyone interested in taking a bit of a wander might possibly like to try one of my personal favourites all of which are in the Newport area. The Lamb is on the main road from Newport towards Harper Adams and does some decent meal deals - Pie Night on a Wednesday for £5, Steak nights for £15 per couple etc. If I have pressed the right buttons, a link to the 'specials' section of their website should be here: http://www.thelambedgmond.com/index.php?p0=events
More expensive but excellent food is available at The Fox at Chetwynd Aston - turn left off the A41 just after what used to be the Focus roundabout. It's a big place but whatever night you go, it's always packed. They run a waiting-list for tables at the bar. They have about six real ales with strange names. The bread and butter pudding with apricot sauce and clotted cream is always on the menu and is possibly the finest pudding I have ever tasted. Sometimes we just go for pudding. Other times we have had the cheese board to share - nobody bats an eyelid and you don't necessarily have to spend a fortune, although you do have to be prepared to prop-up the bar for a while waiting for a table, especially at weekends. The menu is here: http://www.brunningandprice.co.uk/fox/menu/
There is also a tapas/bistro place actually in the town centre which is great and very reasonable. A few steps away from the free car park. Website is here: http://www.redpeppernewport.com/
Hope the weblinks work and nobody minds these being outside Stafford itself.

I love tapas, but to actually try more than a few dishes you always end up spending a fortune. I remember going to the place near St Marys and getting 4 very small dishes and paying nearly 20 quid. They said you were meant to share them, which is true in the Med, but one of them only had 3 king prawns in and cost a fiver so I was buggered if I was gonna share that!

I know what you mean. It's easy to spend a whole evening nibbling and find you've consumed (and spent) rather more than intended. In fairness, we've usually gone as a couple/group and tended to order the equivalent of two dishes each, plus flat breads. Then we've dipped-in to whatever we like the look of and it's not come out at £20 per head but I guess that does depend on how hungry you are! Some teens of my acquaintance went there for a birthday meal a few months back. They were, I'm afraid, planning to hit the various pubs in the town and asked Red Pepper if they could do something pre-pub for a fiver each - that certainly seemed to be enough to keep them the right side of sober but I got the impression that the place was doing that as a bit of a favour to them, early evening. They'd probably hope that people would spend a bit more than that to keep them in business.
