Sadly missed? Blasts from the past - A reminder of Stafford's past

Have we ever discussed Len Hayward's plumbing shop on Freeman Street? A great resource - a contribution to the RNLI fund would always gain you a reward....

Sadly, I learn that Len died in November 2012 - I remember always feeling that I should rehearse my introductory speech before I ventured in, but you would always come out with a solution to your problem....

if that's true, that's brilliant lol.. do you remember approx. when this was? my old man worked for lotus shoes until it shut down, and then continued in the trade on his own after that, so knows the local shoe industry/history pretty well - i might see if he can shed any light!

Steve B, you might remember my grandparents, Ian and Eileen Rennie. They lived at 5 Railway Street for as long as I can remember. I remember going to your parents cobblers shop. You were always guaranteed a friendly and warm welcome.

The Fire Station, by that i mean the one in Mill Bank demolished in the early 70s, not the one that was built where Asda now is which i saw being built and has also been demolished. Whilst on this tact i also saw the 16 storey blocks of flats on Highfields being built and subsequently saw one block Brooke or Binyon Court being demolished. I am now wondering what will be the next Stafford building to do the same......

Watching the BBC Demolition series got me thinking about my 6 weeks living on the 13th floor of Brooke Court April/May 1971 (while doing a Workshop Tech course at Stafford Tech). I used to remark on the flats to the family as we travelled up the M6 in the 90's and then noticed in 2000 that Brooke Court had disappeared! They weren't too bad in 1971 as they were only 4 years old at that time (I think). Was Brooke Court demolished in a controlled explosion (and , if so, is there film of it?) or taken down piece by piece?

I don't recall it being done in a spectacular fashion.

It was a vantage point for some nice pictures, though.

Bit feint I'm afraid ,but these are a few photos from May 1971. Stafford Castle before it was tidied up and Visitor Centre added. View across the fields from Brooke Court towards the castle. Now a housing estate. View across to Binyon Court from Brooke Court 13th floor,

I was cycling along the river yesterday, keeping an eye out for Pike - which you can occasionally spot lurking therein - when i remembered something.

Some time in what must have been the 70's, there were a team of Police divers (or 'Frogmen' as they were then known, is that word still in use?) searching the river from the bridge downstream for...

For what? Can anybody remember what they were looking for? Does anybody know the what and wherefore of it?

I remember one of the divers suddenly jumping up out of the water because a large Pike had just swam right in front of his face mask - the water was a lot murkier then, i think he was the only one who saw it - hence the memory spur.

Was that the Bizniz? If so, his son took over and then moved to Mill Street.

That was Mr Halliwell - they started in one of the shops at the front of the Sandonia and moved to the shop on the corner of Wogan Street before moving to Mill Street, where Ricky can still be found...

Gosh that was years ago. But no it was another shop.. derricuts??
I think you mean Stan Derricut? Lovely, lovely man. Used to have a wide variety of things in his shop, dressed like a women? He died many years ago, My dad became friends with him after they were both in the SGI together. He used to live at Derrington. After he closed his shop, he kept everything that was in it, his house was a treasure trove of excitement for small visitors.
