Sky tv versus virgin packages

I preferred virgin for BB, and used to prefer sky for TV. Nowadays I rarely watch TV, and what I do comes through a nowTV box anyway. I collected a few subs when the boxes were cheap, will have movies and entertainment til after xmas for a total cost of about a fiver.

@kyoto49 I can pause live TV with a YouView box too. Fair enough I don't get all the channels you do, but I get enough and save around £40 per month compared to what you pay them. That pays for me to run a hot tub and not need as much time infront of the telly ;)

Also with regards to having a landline. If you don't take a landline then the price of TV and broadband increases. The companies make it so it's cheaper to take a landline with your TV and BB packages than not.

yes the extra £5 (I think) virgin charge me for their broadband niggles me, just because I don't have their full package.
like WMR says tho, its still cheaper than taking the package, and we only ever use mobiles here with the inclusive minutes, you soon get used to not having a landline.
tv is another thing, sky is better than virgin, if that's what you want. both charge too much money for the service. whenever your contract is up, switch to the other, or use it to get a better deal by threatening to leave. remember you have to give a months notice on leaving, so do it at month 11 or 17, depending on contract

I can never understand people PAYING for a TV service when Freeview exists with over 100 channels. All we pay for is broadband from Virgin... no phone line, no TV package. If you ask alot of people how many minutes they get on their mobile phone, they tell you unlimited calls or at least 500 or more minutes - so why on earth pay companies like Sky for TV and phone when neither are essential these days.

If you're a sports buff or something then I kind of get it, but I find there's too much on Freeview channels already.

2c over

My phone and broadband cost is about £2.50 per month for both if I took the phoneline, which I never use.... show me a Virgin media package that can get within £10 of that (with or without phoneline) and i'll switch....

THAT is why people take phonelines even when they don't need them.... mine never gets used.

EDIT - Just checked and it'd cost me £26.50 a month for Virgin's cheapest package without phoneline - ok its 50mb compared to my 5mb but I don't need 50mb anyway - especially not for an extra £24 a month!!!!!

Okay so you pay £2.50 per month for phone and broadband. What about the cost of your TV on top of that? And then how long do you get that price before being bank-raped?

I pay around £19 for broadband. No phone. No TV.
If I took the phone and TV too it would definitely cost me more as a whole bill, at least after any initial offers were over. I wouldn't use the phone, and I wouldn't want the TV so I'm better off paying more for the broadband not to be forced into the others.

The main argument here is whether or not you love your TV shows so much that you physically can't live with Freeview alone! I have a mate down the street who pays for Sky services PURELY to watch the latest "Lizzard Lick Towing" and for no other reason. As far as I'm concerned, that TV show is therefore costing her £40 a month more than what she would otherwise need to pay for broadband alone with Virgin media. Barking mad!!

That internet/phone deal is with PlusNet - they don't do TV.....

Admittedly after the first year my costs will go up to about £15 - still over £10 cheaper than Virgin but if I ring up and cancel they will just renew the deal.

I separately have the full sky package and thats £26 a month so for £28.50 - only £2 more than broadband alone with Virgin - I get satellite TV too including movies and sports.

Apart from football I watch very little on Sky though so even at that very good rate I am tempted to cancel it but the wife always moans that she watches the movies on it... not sure how she does that when she's in bed asleep every night by 9:30?!?!

Anyway WTF is Lizzard Lick Towing? :)

I pay £26ish for the basic 50meg broadband. 30 meg would be ok for me, but 5-6 meg which i'd get thru a phoneline is too slow. I download a bit, so want the speed, or a more reasonable speed than a phoneline allows.
if I was to have a phone and tv (basic pack) it would be £20/month plus a phone line rental of £16/month. so the extra £10 is not worth it for me to have the phone and basic tv. if I want every channel going, it would be £95 + £16 month, tho i'd get faster bb on top.
personally I would like 30 meg upwards being cheaper than it is. rather than faster speeds offered for the future which always seem to be a promise
one of the reasons we stopped the phone was all the nuisance spam calls despite being ex directory and listed on those bock sites.
I have a mobile that's +10 years old, it gives free landline and o2 calls evenings and weekends, my wife has the same, but gets 50 mins free anytime. 0 rental as they were 'pay up front for life' (back then it was about a £40 one off charge at time of buying the phone). we manage calls with those to get no bills. I mainly use email to message people.
tv, well I can view any channel I want, nothing I can talk about here tho as its just not talked about. we tend to watch the main channels, bbc, itv etc and any football. now and again I look at the documentary channels, but never look at the movies. I've watched them well before they make tv. I've not watched lizard lick towing, probably never will.
my ideal would be about 50meg bb and a hd sport only, tv package. i'd pay upto £35-40/month for that. problem is you have to have all the other crap you don't want to get sport.

With TV it all comes down to the programs you watch, for many a freeview catchup box like the nowTV and something that can play netflix is all they need. But then you can't watch game of thrones :(
