I thought this sort of stuff had ended with Racist Ron.

The Daily Mail are putting up a feeble defence -(much like Wolves).

It's just Banter? Can't they take a Joke?

The Female in question made a dam fine call in the Game.
Sack Andy Gray now.

If I did the same at work I'd get dismissed.

You have to be shitting me.

I'm so glad I work in the private sector and out of sight of the public, else I'd have been sacked a million times over. Thankfully the foreign and female colleagues of mine actually have a sense of humour, and give as good as they get.

Quite.

For some reason it really doesn't surprise me that the absurdly childish reaction lies within football and the sensible comments arefrom a cricketer.

Thanks to Gramaisc for the link to explain what this thread is actually about, so that I knew to move it to the Sports section. :)

It was Top story on Google News when I posted - above the Yates Murder, Irish crisis, Phone Hacking and the Chilcott inquiry. Every news bulletin on every station has carried it!

I suppose it is 'Sport' - but it asks bigger questions and that's why we have the reaction we do.

Because its easy to have an opinion on it...

Yes I know what Irony is.

I chose the title of the post with deliberation and care.

It seems I wasted my time.

Don't have any sympathy with Mr Gray and Mr Keys for their comments, definitely out of line regarding her ability to understand the off-side rule, however....... I don't believe women should be running the line in a male football match, female match no problem. Male football is a mans game at the end of the day and some of these stupid equality ideas push the boundaries too far, equality yes, positive selection no!

Didn't agree, but then thought, "Mmm!, they don't play in the same game after12, but men officiate in women's hockey, and women officiate in snooker! Its a quandary! :?:

I don't think it's a quandary at all.

Is it not the case that there have been difficulties recruiting sufficient quantities of officials in the game for some time now? The woman was not playing the game, she was officiating - as long as she is competent to do so what possible grounds for complaint are there.

Unless you have evidence that this woman was selected on anything other than merit, this statement is nonsensical.

Someone on another forum has pointed out she didn't miss a call all match, is this correct? If so, she's better than many a male official....

If you're not a Man Utd fan, would you prefer her or Howard Webb?..

I didn't see the game but have heard the same said.

For what it's worth i think the reaction to the 'offending' comments has been a bit over the top - i mean, ex-footballer is sexist thicko! - shock horror!

Saying women don't understand the off-side rule is just one of those old chestnuts that blokes say, like saying women drivers are rubbish. I suspect that those women that don't understand it couldn't really care much less about football.

Would you not share a stage with a Woman then?

Presumably you think Gabby Logan/Clare Balding not quite up to the task?

One word: ALAN HANSON!!!!

As withnail says the last statement doesn't make sense. Has she not attened the same coaching schools as the male Ref's? Attained the same qualifications? demonstrated the same level of fitness?

One day all this will be done by a person - gender uninportant watching a heads up display 100 miles away or players will have sensors sewn into their jockstraps.

You've all been brainwashed...... In my mind equality is not an issue, however there are some situations which do not lend themselves to equality.....Can you imagine the abuse she got from lineside fans, even though she displayed competence at her job! Regarding the stupid statement about not sharing a stage with a woman WTF has that got to do it??

If she still chooses to do it, because it is something she loves, why not let her? Lets face it, she hardly got the job from the jobcentre. She must really want to do this, you can imagine the stick she gets from everyone. I can't see an issue as long as she can do the job.

Yes, i bet that was quite something!

If she can handle it, which let's face it she'll have to, then that's her look out. Any 'referees assistant' is going to have to take some stick, it's up to them whether it's worth it.

If she can't handle it, she'll jack it in, but i still don't see what role gender plays in this.
