I don't know where this idea of erasing the differences between the sexes has come from. You can't deny that men and women are different, with their brains and genitals wired differently and I don't believe anybody is trying to deny that (or anyone sensible anyway).

There is a very good reason that women, traditionally, have stayed in the home to look after the children. That reason is that it is instinct for them to look after what they have given birth to.
There is a very good reason that men, traditionally, have gone to work. That reason is the deeply ingrained instinct to provide for their families.

The thing is, just because those differences exist, doesn't mean that somebody can't defy them if they want to.

If a woman proves that she is fully capable of doing a traditionally male job, nobody should stop her from doing so. If a man proves he is fully capable of doing a traditionally female role, nobody should stop him, and what's more, nobody should insult or degrade them for doing so.

That's the point of equality law. Not erasing gender differences or unfair promotion of inadequate staff to meet targets, but making sure that nobody qualified should be refused a job or victimised purely on the grounds of something they cannot help.

The 'erasing differences' excuse is just a thinly disguised way of being sexist, I'm afraid.

My comment is not is thinly disguised way of being sexist, it meant to be a comment of some seriousness, just because you don't agree with it, doesn't mean it should be deemed shallow

Would you not share a stage with a Woman then?

I've joined discussions on other Forums where I lurk - tend to be populated by creative types, photogs, Designers, Musicians etc and the split in favour of the outcome is more like 95 to 5%.
Earlier in the day they had a poll in the Grauniad asking whether Gray should've been sacked and at the time it was 56% yes, 44% no - The Grauniad! I've tried to find out what the final score was but failed - calling Gramaisc and his superior searching skills.
I feel this post has run it's course.
John may still have popcorn, though i doubt it is curry flavoured.

I, too, have some sort of memory of something like that, but I can find no corroborating evidence..

I didn't say it was shallow, I said it was sexist. It is not my opinion that it is sexist, it is a fact that it is sexist.

I'm sure you have some thoroughly considered and very intellectual reasons for having such sexist opinions, but sexist they still are.

On a side note.... actually, on the original point, Keys has resigned now. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/9376139.stm

The poll doesn't close for another hour - the score is currently 72.8% Yes and 27.2% No..

The result seems only to be currently visible if you have voted. I presume that they will make it more visible when voting has closed.

I knew i could count on you.

I was too timid to actually vote.

This story has moved on somewhat, even since this morning, what?

It was Top story on Google News when I posted - above the Yates Murder, Irish crisis, Phone Hacking and the Chilcott inquiry. Every news bulletin on every station has carried it!

I suppose it is 'Sport' - but it asks bigger questions and that's why we have the reaction we do.
Because its easy to have an opinion on it...
Good point, well made.

FYI I did vote Yes, he was out of order, even as a Neanderthal I can see he was wrong. Difficult to type when you're holding onto a wench by her hair

The banter argument is a poor one. There is a massive difference between expecting a linesman (of any gender) of being able to take abuse from irate fans and expecting them to take abuse from professional commentators.
Bitching about her behind her back, purely for being a woman, is not banter. It's good old fashioned sexism.
Nice definition of what sexism is, if anyone cares for the intellectual argument.
Toooldtorock, try this one. I'm sure you could look up many more examples if you felt like furthering the discussion instead of getting defensive.

Not quite sure which quote I'm meant to follow...If you follow the link AND READ IT you might find the objectivity and subjectivity issues raised suggest that just like beauty, sexism is in the eye of the beholder. Defensive moi, no just trying to do my bit to maintain open discussion on this forum

I did read it... it says exactly the opposite actually. Did you read it or just find some words you liked and make up the surrounding ones?

If you want to further open and free discussion, you could give some of those wonderfully well thought out reasons you insist that you have for your sexist opinions instead of resorting to demanding to know who I am and what right I have to disagree with you.

You're obsessed with reminding us all that you're entitled to your opinion but don't seem to be particularly keen on responding intelligently to having it challenged.

Obviously your interpretation is different to mine, I did read it all to come to that conclusion, as I said earlier very subjective. I said what I said because you seem to have an opinion that your views and opinions are superior to anyboby else's, i.e. Actually, I'm afraid, at the close of your sentences. On this forum we are all equal. And you are keen on responding intelligently when your opinion is challenged??

Well actually that's my opinion and I am entitled to it :)

I have been responding intelligently all along, I'm afraid. Sir.

Brilliant riposte!

To Admin I say - You were wrong to put this in 'Sports and Activities' I was correct in it being a much bigger topic and many will not have clocked it - I rarely look in S&A and a few posters will have missed out.

My composition of an earliar post was deliberate - we are all entitled to voice opinions and being a hihgly intelligent Liberal minded bunch can be trusted to keep each other in check but there are still limits and if anyone here does stray into those dark areas of Race Hate etc we are all answerable to the laws of the land. It's great to have anonymity but I try to Voice/offer opinions and arguments that I would feel comfortable making in a pub with a stranger.

To Withnail I say - the 'Stupid Comment' point was to highlight the attitude TOOLDTOROCK has towards Woman which even shoes has picked up on. The Womans Role? A Mans Game? Society was better when Roles were more defined? I'm paraphrasing a bit but I still maintain it's a minority view. etc You were a bit hasty in quoting the Guardian poll too.

ie Is not Rock and Roll a Mans world? What are the acceptable roles for women? GP? Teacher? Bank Manager? Cop?

To drag it all kickin' and screamin back to Sport I can see one day Women pro Footballers in the lower leagues - maybe even higher. Pleny of Women are much fitter than me (cyclists, surfers). Plenty are much cleverer. It is not so long ago we were told that the ladies would never run Marathons, Row, Ski,etc.

More than a few women race with good times at the TT now - now that takes balls.

The poll closed, at midnight, with the voting levels exactlly the same as I found above.

Brilliant riposte? Good yes, briliant I don't think so. The women on stage comment is still a stupid one, and I can't for the life of me figure out its relevance to the topic.
