To Admin I say - You were wrong to put this in 'Sports and Activities' I was correct in it being a much bigger topic and many will not have clocked it - I rarely look in S&A and a few posters will have missed out.
Like you, I have little interest in sport. Therefore, until this furore I had no idea who Andy Gray or Richard Keys were. Indeed, I probably still would not recognise them if I saw them. Therefore, it was not very helpful to have a post such as:

I thought this sort of stuff had ended with Racist Ron.

The Daily Mail are putting up a feeble defence -(much like Wolves).

It's just Banter? Can't they take a Joke?

The Female in question made a dam fine call in the Game.
Sack Andy Gray now.

If I did the same at work I'd get dismissed.
How on earth was I (or anyone else) to know to whom you were referring with a thread title like "Slaphead Jock Nogger Moron"?

You didn't provide a link or any kind of reference to the Daily Mail article you mention. You didn't quote any of the banter that you mention. You didn't specify "the female in question" that you mention. There was literally no way I could decipher the subject of the thread, unless I was somehow privy to your own particular brand of vernacular or happened to know exactly what was going on in your head at the time of posting!

It was Top story on Google News when I posted - above the Yates Murder, Irish crisis, Phone Hacking and the Chilcott inquiry. Every news bulletin on every station has carried it!
Perhaps when you made the post, but the nature of news means that that may not have been the case a few hours (or even minutes) later. Again, without any kind of reference or information, how on earth was I or anyone expected to know to what you were referring?

I suppose it is 'Sport' - but it asks bigger questions and that's why we have the reaction we do.
I moved the post based on the fact that the only information I was provided with was from Gramaisc, which linked to a story on BBC Sport, about 2 sports presenters, commenting on a sportsperson, on a sports channel.

I agree that there are bigger questions surrounding it. It is a shame that you did not ask them in the original post, and make the subject clearer to encourage more people (such as people like you and I who may not check the Sports & Activities forum) to join in the discussion.

My composition of an earliar post was deliberate - we are all entitled to voice opinions and being a hihgly intelligent Liberal minded bunch can be trusted to keep each other in check
I completely agree, which is why I try to censor/moderate The Forum as little as possible. Like you say, you're all a good bunch at heart, and even when things get a little out of hand it is very often resolved with a few red faces and apologies. :)

...but there are still limits and if anyone here does stray into those dark areas of Race Hate etc we are all answerable to the laws of the land.
Most definitely, and I have had the police contact me with regards to content on The Forum more than once, so believe me no-one is more aware of this than I! However, someone voicing their opinion is not illegal.

don't mention the blinds
Early 80s i was dragged to a football game by some drinking buddies, it was white hart lane the home ground of tottenham hotspur, well i soon sobered up when i saw that one of the linesmen was asian, blimey i thought this is going to get rowdy. The chants/taunts were mainly to with curry, ghandhi, turbans (not that he wore one) and silly stuff like that. Towards the end of the match a huge throng were singing "we want our sweet shop back" over and over. How the fella completed the last 10mins of the game i do not know he was laughing so much he could hardly stand. At the final whistle he walked towards the section that had barracked him so much that afternoon and waved, oh no thought i this is going to get messy, however not only did the crowd cheer and applaud him they chanted his name and continued this until he was out of sight... Funny old game........

The link I posted definitely does state that sexism exists and acts can be inherently sexist whether they are intended so, or not. Also, that acts can be inherently sexist whether they are taken so, or not. So, if a case aligns with the historically defined 'rules' of sexism then it is sexist. It does not matter whether the people involved take it that way, mean it that way, or the opposite.

Whether something is sexist (be it a word, a consumable item, a practice, or anything else) is neither dependent on how it is intended nor how it is received, but on whether it serves to convey sexism, which itself is determined by its alignment with existent patterns

Quite. I took the point of the article to be that sexism is defined by specific rules and not by the intention. Hence, toooldtorock may not intend to be sexist or believe he is sexist but he is still being sexist. As I said.

I ♥ cryptic crosswords
In a 1979 interview with the Express & Star Andy Gray said he would like to end his career at Molineux

Got his wish then...

Anyone catch question time last night? You had to laugh at Edwina Curry's opening gambit. "The fat slob deserved what he got". There is a certain irony in dishing out abuse to fattys when discussing other forms of abusive behaviour.

I wonder if Al Jazeera's sports news anchor women are up to the same standard as SkySports? Burkatastic!

Every cloud has a silver lining huh? This thread had Gray down as being on 10M a year with Sky, which was of course utter nonsense. However, a few petro dollars later and bingo!

My error this - serves me right for listening to Radio 5 as an alternative to the increasingly stupid TODAY programme.

His salary from Sky is a mere £1.75m. Still £34,000 a week wasn't bad - plus probably the same again for the PS3/Xbox games.
