Judging by a license application / facebook posts Slater's Ales are looking to turn to old British Heart Foundation shop into what I can only guess will be a micro pub.

Facebook post says 'early next year'

I've been trying to work out if that was ever a pub in the past - there were a few on that side of the road in the black and white times.

The Wheatsheaf must have been close to that location.

How do I edit this?
According to my trusty copy of Inns & Alehouses of Stafford it was the Crown & Horseshoe until 1824.

Edit: of course @darts22 may be able to offer further details, since he wrote the book I got my information from.

I'm surprised slaters haven't opened up a pub in Stafford sooner. Their Wolverhampton pub has been open a number of years now. Another welcome addition to Stafford.

Whilst I'm now at the age where I prefer a quiet pint, it would also be nice if pubs like the Nelson reopened for those much younger than me.

Enjoying a drop of red.

Couldn't agree more.

Not sure what is wrong with the Nelson, I suspect that it needs a lot of work on it, particularly on the domestic accommodation. Lease is available free of tie at a guide rent of £29,500pa. The good news is that the property is now marked as let subject to contract. (or as the agent's web site has it Lett STC)

I went to look at this site 6 months ago. It’s in a bad state of disrepair, particularly the upper floors. It would take significant investment to make this a viable business. The whole pub needs a complete refurb, and they were offering it on a 10 year deal. You wouldn’t consider the level of investment needed unless you had a much longer term or could purchase the pub outright.

It would surprise me if the Nelson ever opens again as a pub unless they are willing to sell it, which at the moment it seems not.

What Slaters are doing seems a far more viable alternative. Their bar in Wolves was a Costa Coffee before they renovated it. The way forward seems to be to escape the clutches of the traditionally brewery or pub co owned ‘tavern’ style buildings and take better deals in ‘retail’ style buildings.

I visited slaters brewery on Saturday. Whilst drinking the lovely FREE beer I got talking to Andrew Slater. He was saying they are hoping to open the new bar by April. A number of hurdles to get over first.

The planners want to agree the colour scheme of the exterior despite it previously being an awful red. They want an architect to be appointed to determine the location of the tables and chairs and they've got to get through the licencing committee.

I'm hoping the licencing committee will realise that the vast majority of people are able to drink alcoholic drinks at the front of premises without being stupid. I'd personally like to see people sitting outside the new slaters bar, the bear and no.7 drinking sensibly and enjoying themselves.
