Some DIY advice?

My first floor windows are in rather desperate need of a lick of paint. There is a 2-3' sloping roof over the bay window & porch that seems to be rather in the way. I wondered if anyone had any ideas or experience for how best to reach them.

I have access to ladders & a shed full of scrap wood. I'm thinking that if I could secure some sort of board to the roof that would give me a perfect platform to work from, but unfortunately a conventional roof ladder won't work as there is nowhere to hook it - the top of the roof being leaded to the wall.

Just the sills? They could be sandstone - gentle scraping and wire-brushing, then slap more paint on.

Doable from inside, that small roof section and the wall position can make use of ladders very awkward.

The sills and the painted stones at the top (& maybe the fascia & gutters if I'm going to be up there anyway...) . The windows themselves are upvc. It's also not really doable from inside as the smaller window only opens at the top. If I could find a safe way to anchor a scaffold board to the little roof that would be perfect as I could easily reach everything I need to get to from that.

As you say a regular extension ladder is going to be too far away, or at too shallow an angle.

If you can provide anchor points - in the garden wall? - then a ladder with the base 'too far out' is doable, but also easier to fall off.

You could make three or four suitably angled brackets and attach them to the brickwork over the small roof.

They would suit the other houses in the road, too.

The platform would be nicer to work from, but I think you're right in that a 45° ladder with the feet secured to the garden wall might be the way to go. I think I have some big webbing straps somewhere that would allow me to attach the top end between the two windows too.

It really is a lot easier to fall off a ladder in that style, but, if done carefully, it is probably the 'best' way to approach this one-off job.

Do consider what is below you - pointy railings, etc?
