Some tits are trying to break into my house.

They are the long-tailed variety and have spent most of the last two days trying to knock a way through the bay windows, both upstairs and down. They may have been at it longer, as I've been away. They seem quite determined. Is this normal? The pair of them were hammering on the bedroom window this morning and they've been taking turns at the downstairs one on and off all day, so far.

I know you don't need it, but a skill point for an excellent thread title. And welcome back, we've missed you Gramaisc.

I think I have read some where that they are after the linseed oil in the putty , your next post may be "My windows have fallen out".:D

The windows that they are attacking have been there since 1935. The putty is as hard now as it's ever going to be. Their attention is clearly directed at the glass. The one pane that I replaced ten years ago does not seem to be of any interest to them. They have removed some small pieces of loose putty, but that would seem to be more with the intention of providing themselves with safer working conditions. Initially, I wondered if they were taking spiders off the glass, but they've been at it for two days now.

It's not just me they're irritating, there's some sparrows in the hedge that come out now and then to shoo them off when the noise gets too much to bear.

Maybe the old glass is more reflective and they are trying to see off perceived intruders on their territorial bliss? Perplexing indeed.

Old glass tends to be less reflective, I believe, and I'm confident in my assertion that mine are not the cleanest windows in the street. Also, there doesn't seem to be a great deal of aggression involved. I understand that long-tailed tits are not that territorial in the whole scheme of things, not like robins and blackbirds often are.

Edit:- I found this which contains some uncorroborated conjecture - and a post from someone calling himself 'stoofer'....

Come to think of it they are very sociable birds, ie they live in small flocks, so unlikely to be overly aggressive on that front.

Maybe you have assumed Augustine powers and they are merely pointing out your windows need replacing?

My windows may be a bit iffy, but do I go and criticise their nest? Did I mind when they stripped half the bark off my silver birch? Was I even thanked when I put a ball of hair in the cherry tree for them to use for soft-furnishing? If they're at it again tomorrow they'll get a piece of my mind....

Maybe you should test my Augustine theory by asking them first before you go shouting your mouth off and causing a scene.

My advice is to follow mr dahls lead and apply liberal amounts of glue to your window and bake a pie with the catch.

My God, health & safety hits bird land, shouldn't you be issuing hard hats and toe tectors? After all as the land owner they may take you to a very small claims court which may result in you getting a large bill.
