Spoons reopening postponed?

Latest rumours seem to indicate that the idea of reopening Spoons may be abandoned, as it seems to have flooded again, meaning, they'd have to start the refurb process again.

Which is a shame tbh, as it was being kitted out to a higher standard than the old one.

Edit - ? added to title.

2nd edit - "Abandoned" changed to "Postponed".

Do these rumours have a source or is it just social media speculation?

Wouldn't surprise me, mind you.

The river looks higher than it did when it flooded, it's easy to think the worst, unless they've done something to help prevent it happening again before they started refurb?

It's a shame if true, lovely building, and what will happen- if it is the case, another empty building ?

Hey I didn't realise it was still closed from the previous flooding. I thought it would have been completed weeks ago? This is a shame if it never opens again, but I suppose if it is regularly going to be flooded, then what's the point of sprucing it all up?

It was meant to be a lick of paint and reopened again quickly, but wetherspoons decided due to the changing markets , and growing competition in the area, it was going to be a high end spoons , with a more upmarket feel, hence the initial delay.

Shame really.

They could still reopen, but it'd need to be drastically changed to eliminate the flood risk, effectively the whole floor would need raising , so it's all on one level, street level, with stairs then going down into the terrace. The toilets would also need to be demolished and raised.

If it's going to need that much work, it'd be easier to acquire a new building. Maybe the shire hall becoming spoons doesn't seem like such a joke after all.

Pity they didn't do their research to find it has flooded for many years in the past, so very likely to be regularly under water again.
Bottom end by the cinema screen always used to flood many years ago. My dad told me they just closed off the front few rows and carried on with the films in his day.

Wetherspoon have been trying to open somewhat more upmarket pubs as the management were finally getting upset about the reputation of their pubs.

I've been trying to remember when it first opened as Spoons. I left Stafford in 1988 and I can't remember if it was open then, but I've visited often over the years. As I remember it didn't have any fruit machines at first but clearly that policy changed. This pix I took in August 2018 after a long walk around the town taking in old sites .. (Common railway path, Beaconside, Second Withies, the new walkway, ladder bridge, MRI (being demolished) and down the river from Fairway to end up in 'The Picture House' for a couple of pints.)

Sad to hear of its troubles, I saw a lot of films there back in the day.

If they do close for good, I wonder what will happen to all the pictures/photographs round the place?

Last film was shown on 30th of March 1995.

Opened in its new role on 6th of March 1997.

Allegedly.

I understand Wetherspoons own the picture house so selling might be an issue with its current flood plight.

If there is even an issue this time with flooding (we don't know) they would do well to sort out that issue, if they have yet to do so.

But at the end of the day no matter what course of action they take to prevent flooding, mother nature can always get the upper hand with man made objects close to such water levels, particularly in low lying areas like Stafford who not only have to deal with their own rainfall but everyone else's run off from far far up river.

I always prefered the Picture house to The Odeon as you could see more with it being layered down in steps.
I remember it being so pitch black once the lights had gone down ,and with each row being a step up had to grope your way to a seat by the tiny torchlight of the usherette . Last film I saw there was 'The Devil Rides out' with my mate (unedited version....seen it since on TV and not half as scary as the one we saw in the Picture house). Scared us to death ... and scared half the audience when I screamed at not even a scary bit, grabbed the man next to me, who grabbed the lady next to him in fright, and she screamed  Most missed a few minutes of the film amongst all the screaming and laughing that followed.
