Another Saturday night brought around the next round of this years 'Battle of the Bands' competition at the Staffs University
Union, featuring Regards, MausKramp and Eskimo (Someone?).
Always take id to the union, it matters not if you're clearly 18 or 65, the staff at the 'Legends' bar insist on knowing
the name of every person who enters the union, if you're stuck without any id, verification by your friends stating that
you are who you say you are will probably get you in. It's not exactly blagging it into Glastonbury, but it really adds an edge to the
night. Yes, Yes oh Yay.
Yes, it was another night where the folk go and scream for 'their' band who are playing and at the very least pretend not to notice
the opposition or heckle them like a bastard. It's like rock n roll's eqivalent of supporting your local team, primitive, terrortorial
and not very clever. Critical faculties are put to one side for a bit of unashamed bias and ignorant prejudice, oh what fun. To help it along
is the cheap alcohol supplied by the union; £1.65 for a Jack n Coke, nice.
Pledge allegiance to a cause, to a place, to band or to a team then a sense of meaning is created simply by caring about that thing. If other people
care too, then a sense of togetherness is created and the meaning is made more accessible. This must be why all the students from Staffordshire Uni
always stay in the farking union! I'm sure the cheap drinks count for something, but they must all love it on top of that hill because I've never seen any of these
young men out in Stafford's town centre. It is a shame though, that the union itself refuses to advertise or promote anything that exists outside of the University, helping
to separate it even more from the rest of the town. Then again, maybe Stafford doesn't want or need a few hundred extra emo's flooding it with gutteral grunts and screams every weekend.
The night began with Regards meandering through their pleasant set, bouncing around the stage with melodic exuberance, sometimes creating a little rush of energy
throughout the crowd and recieving a good response from the audience. It's easy to feel that Regards do have the potential to write some 'big' tunes as they get a little older,
and good luck to them.
Next up was MausKramp, the band with the 'music is fun - music is religion' dichotomy; they certainly got a good response from the crowd, the vitriol produced by frontman Uggy was unwasted, it's energy
dispersed into the driving dance beats and propelling the tunes along.
And finally was Eskimo (Someone?), a band from Stoke who seemed to have only one tune; the first one. And that wasn't very good. After that we were treated to 20 minutes or so of bland
chord changes and uninspiring vocals that left me in such a state of indifference I could barely be arsed to lift my drink to my mouth. Of course; they won.
