Stafford Constitutional Conservative Club

Went to see a mate's band in here on Saturday night, very impressed with the place. Cheap beer (eg Top Totty @ £2.35 a pint, Banks's mild @ £2.20) and did a fair range of meals @ £5.00, mind you the 8 (or was it 10?) oz sirloin with the usual 'trimmings' was £6.50!
All the usual pub stuff going on, lively bar area with dart board, four full sized snooker tables and a comfy seperate function room where the band played.

We used to play snooker there when the Sandonia first closed...it was really nice, quiet and civilised. Especially compared to Riley's!

£13.00 a year according to my mate, he also said that the commitee are not planning any bar price increases until 2014.
I've known a few people who were members, mostly for snooker purposes, and they all held it in good regard, but they've all moved away now..

Just shows that a pub/club can survive without charging extortionate prices for their food and drinks, the place is well kept and maintained. I'd happily pay £13.00 a year to take advantage of those prices if I were still in Stafford.

OK bringing up this blast from the past because....

It used to be you had to be a Conservative Party member to be a member here.

Is that still true?

They seem to have dropped reference to the Conservative bit lately.

Wondering if it's a hot bed of BJ fans.

The website seems not to work at the moment, but the Facebook page makes no mention of political conditions of membership.

I've been in there twice (as a guest), so they'll probably let almost anybody in...

I would, however, suspect that wearing a Corbyn badge wouldn't get you any free drinks.

I have vague recollections of a bit of a schism in the past, leading to the Conservative association moving into the Portakabin on castle Street.

The Constitutional Club in the village next to the one where I used to live had two senior committee members, one Conservative one Labour. They alternated between Chairman & Secretary on an annual basis. No-one cared about politics, it was just the best place in the village to drink. Might be a bit different now though.

Interesting. They certainly seem to be playing down the connection if it still exists.

The association always lived in the portacabin I think. The drinking wing of the party hung out at Lloyd street.

In the days of Cash.

Spit.

I was a member a while back, and I'm no Tory by a long shot. Stopped going because they changed managers and I didn't like the new ones, that was probably at least 5 years ago mind.

Guess it has changed then. Last time I was there was the mid 90s I'd guess.
