Stafford history

Hi everyone! I have been researching my OH's family tree and have come across a couple of road/building names that i cant locate. They are Austins Buildings, Austins Row and White Lanes Buildings. Probably North end Stafford as all the family was in the shoe industry. Anyone have any idea where they were???

I know of White Lion St, whether that was the name of the buildings there I'm not sure. What are the names that you are tracing.

Where is White Lion Street? My stafford newsletter guide has vanished! Don't want to say the name as we are the only family in Stafford with the name. I have traced it back to 1800 and they were all in the shoe industry in the North end. Later on they moved to the pub trade with the Lamb Inn being owned/managed by 2 generations.Never even been in the place!

i would have thought 'Austins' anything would have been round St Austins Church; this is Austins Row anyway;

white lion street is where the roundabout where the malt and hops/the island/kwik fit is.

Know where the Island pub is? Well, at the opposite end of that row, there is a little street that runs up to the side of The Blue Room. That is White Lion Street.

I never knew that, and I spent 4 years of my life working (heh) in the "Borg Cube" on the corner (now the Carer's Center or something).

It sounds like it could be round the area everyone rich upsetter is describing. But my first thought was the same as labcm's. White Lion Street is not very far away from St Austins and a lot of the area (bottom of the Wolverhampton Road) was knocked down in the 60's and 70's to make way for new roadworks. However, this is also true of the Northend.

The people in county records/ William Salt library are really helpful and if you ask them they will be able to show you maps from before the said areas was knocked to bits, and will make copies for you.

Stafford shoe industry had a lot of spin off industries and there were a lot of cottage industry shoemakers, I live near St Austins and researched the history of a couple of houses nearby some of which had a long history of shoemaking from home.

Tek-monkey you must live near to me!

The street called Austin Friars, I think its the row of terraces that must be Austin's Row.

Staffordshire Past Track site Staffordshire Past Track has some interesting historic photos in that area, just type in Austin Friars in the quick search box, and there is pictures of an old Labour home and the people that lived and worked there 1897 - 1898 (c.)

I'm on Friars Terrace, just opposite the council place. Used to live on Park Street too, you can tell I move far!

Are the detour drivers that can't understand the no entry and one way signs driving you crackers?

wasn't Stafford Militia also in the Austin Friars area? Or was it by the old police station, now the market/guild hall.

Tempted to jump in front of one, and get lots of compensation. Be interesting to see their excuse then!

Many Thanks for all your replies. My only problem with Austins buildings being off the Wolverhampton road is that on the 1881 census they show as being in the Parish of St Mary, Eccliastical Parish of ChristChurch and the census taker did the Sandon road before Austins Buildings. After the school holidays i will see if the William Salt have any records that would help.

labcm, I've just found this text on Stafford Past Tracks:

'The original police barracks were at the back of the Guildhall on Market Square. These were demolished in 1867 to make way for the covered market. The military barracks on Friar's Terrace became vacant in 1882, so the police moved in. This is now the site of the headquarters of the County Library.'

Doesn't mention anything about 'militia'. But I know from an old map I've seen in the archives (approx 1877) that there was a police barracks and army barracks on Friars Terrace.

Tek Monkey you made me laugh, like the idea but I wouldn't advise it. I'm just fed up of feeling like a Safari Park animal getting stared at by people queing in their cars in an 'ooh look at the local person ooh look its got a home ' kind of way. I also got run into the other day by some taxi driving nutter who couldn't wait a milli second while I locked my car door.

Know what you mean, they do stare a lot. Its not like they even look away when they see you look back. I've started leaving my bathroom window open wide so they see me having a pee if they look up :)
