Stafford shops closing - Turning into a ghost town?

Sitting in Caffe Nero earlier, admiring the view, as you do, I couldn't help but feel what a dreadful loss to Stafford Brighthouse will be, with its 69.9% interest.

Those who work there must be proper proud.

I imagine they are more interested in earning a living, many people are too concerned with providing for themselves and their families than to worry to much about 'pride' in their work.

Ultimately it is a consenting transaction between a business and private individuals who should read before they sign.

My issue isn't with these high interest companies, although I certainly am not a fan, its that I cannot remember receiving a single finance management class at any point in my some 18 years of full time education, and I assume it hasn't changed much since then.

Maybe if people were taught the dangers of lending to people before they are legally old enough to do so, we wouldn't have such a problem.

basil

don't mention the blinds
People are taught many things

And then there is cognitive dissonance

Surely it was Mark Twain who reported that sanity was not statistical

And then Leon Festinger comes along and then,

whoa! people cannot think or resonate with the world.....

Just seen a post on Spotted Stafford -

The Stafford Cinema is closing down. We here at the cinema would like to thank every customer that has ever visited the cinema, whether you visited once a week, once a month, or just the once. We could not have made it this far without your support. We're sad to be going but thankful for the time we spent working at the cinema and seeing so many of you walk through our doors. Thank you all.

From all the staff at Stafford Cinema

"I look at that building and many years ago it was a bingo hall, but I really don't know what it should be now, I can't see what else it would be.

"I don't want it to stay empty. We need someone with a lot of money and bright ideas.

"Maybe it could be made into a small theatre, but we have the Gatehouse so I don't know.

Wow!

So we just need someone or four people with bright ideas and a shed load of money for :

The Cinema
The Shire Hall
The Post House
The Chetwynd Centre

Do these people exist, because we keep searching for them.

A few have harped on, in hope, about the cinema one day becoming a music venue. Having visited Manchester Apollo a couple of times and it being full for most shows they hold, it struck me as a larger version of our own Apollo.
I'm thinking a converted all standing bottom floor would help the capacity towards 1000+ quite easily so you could have one or both floors used and there's room to convert bar space downstairs.

Music venues are closing faster than department stores. Can’t help but think it would be a fool’s errand.

But she is absolutely right though.

Folk can throw around easy terms such as music venues with ease, but the viability just is not there in a mid sized town when music venues huff and puff in city centres

Bingo hall- no chance, cinema- that ship has sailed, casino- tend to favour warehouse style units in areas with larger populations.

Beyond that whoever took this on would need deep, deep pockets as so much needs doing.

Personally I have never been a fan of this building from back to front. It is only a notch up from the civic centre in look and style ( ugly). I wouldn't have any issues with the building being levelled for another more sustainable use.

What's the inside like recently?

I mainly recall it from the mid 70s to early 80s.

Stalls and circle.

One big honking room.

Did they modify it?

Now that you can't get a train back from a Birmingham gig (and Wolvo is very hit and miss) a music venue may do well! Inn the good old days you could see a band in Birmingham, have a pint or 3 after an still get a train home. Nowadays forget it, it's a hotel or leave early.

Redrum has proven that a small music venue can make a go of things, something that size would need bigger names though.

So you want to level the old cinema, Sheridan centre and I think you said something similar for the Guildhall.

Is this your answer to every building in Stafford? May as well make everything into a car park then.

We ain't leaving the Manics early!!!! Never have done and never will :)

Train back to Wolves and jump in a taxi or stay out if there's no train.

Whatever happened to the overnight train to Holyhead?
