Stafford shops closing - Turning into a ghost town?

Fuel, which is mainly tax so....
Even that is debatable, the AA missions are effectively just replacement (and more realistic) training flights.

Other state assets are also routinely used to ferry patients and organs around.

It's a matter of political will and accountability.

(and me! - Ed)
Two of my friends owe their lives to Staffordshire Air Ambulance and their excellent crew. The fact that most/all air ambulances are not state funded and rely on charitable donations is an absolute scandal.

But then so many other things that don't happen in the UK are a scandal as well so it just gets lost in the mix.

Not the election thread I know but if one of the parties just had the balls to say, look were going to raise the tax rate by x% but in exchange we're going to fund a, b and c, they'd get my vote.

I owe a massive debt to the Air-ambulance & its crew that landed in Rowley Park on the morning of Saturday 7th of June 2008, and transported my barely sentient torso to The Royal Stoke University Hospital. The marvellous opportunity was delivered to me by the generosity of the thousands of donations from members of the public, who will probably never know what a gift I had been afforded. I know not whether the outcome of more traditional land ambulance would have had the same result; with traffic vibration and Stafford Traffic slowing the journey.:xd: I suspect not!

My fire service colleagues raised a significant sum for the cause, and I have done my bit! I have one lasting result from my bang on the noodle, a complete inability to pass an Air Ambulance collection tin, without emptying my pockets of change! :stafford: I won't get into the debate about who should fund the service, it is what it is, and I do what I can to support it, including putting my pinkies to work in this missive! :heyhey:

And this is why I always donate. I give them around £10 a month and always give any change I have to the guy outside iceland, this is something we need to keep going. At the moment it is free, I can imagine a future where it is outsourced at huge cost.

A really significant number of people in town today for the festivities. Those local traders who moan that there was insufficient footfall today maybe need to focus on their offering instead.

We were in town yesterday between about 2 & 5pm & it was busy for most of the time, certainly the busiest I've seen it for quite a while. We parked at the old civic centre car park & there was loads of people by the Riverside centre as we passed. The Town was busy also but we both commented on how the shops in town (didn't go to riverside) we're pretty quiet.

I was also in town yesterday afternoon, walked the length of the high street with a chick on my arm. Unusual in not bumping into any known acquaints until arriving at The Sun.....

I see Stafford's very finest firm of solicitors has a board up saying it's moving.

The Only Real Justification can be to move their visual blight to another, select, part of town.
