Stafford shops opening - Turning into a boom town?

Costa manages , so do Starbucks , even Greggs with multiple units within walking distance , so I don't see a massive issue with 3 McDonald's. They're all targeting fairly different areas of town anyway, n each can sustain its own audience.

Would have preferred a burger king though to mix things up, or a return of wimpy even.

We were meant to have a fourth Greggs, one was meant to take over an empty unit in that string of shops on foregate street, near news and booze / wagon and horses, but that fell through for whatever reason, n they took the one on Riverside instead.

I don't think the town centre one will bothered the bristol street one might be.

But with the town expanding maybe 3 can cope.

I think they all serve very different needs and audiences - just because they all serve the safe food doesn't really mean they serve the same customer bases.

Just thinking about the ways I use McDonalds
  • I use the town center one every so often for lunch / breakfast or grabbing something on the way to the train station
  • I've gone through the drive thru one when I've either been that side of town for some reason (The Range usually) or if I've been on my way to Stoke (or on the way back) in a car with other people
  • I imagine the Kingsmead one will work really well if we're on our way back from something in the car and we need to grab food on our way home
If you're a slightest fan of McDonalds - or indeed just need somewhere you can get a coffee at 11pm on a Sunday driving back from somewhere late - they're all going to work for people slightly differently, and be of use at that specific time - and if it helps balance out the queues in them all the better.

.

They do this on purpose - This is a 10 year old piece in the LA Times that makes a good stab at explaining it but the gist of it is this (and although high streets have adapted and changed in 10 years the basic principal is this:

Say I walk from my house on St. Leonards, via the Oval, behind the Green hall, down by the river, through riverside shopping center and on through town, past the council offices, and onto Greengate street past Starbucks and out the other side of town onwards to my hairdressers new location somewhere up Goal road. It's morning and I want a coffee, and maybe a doughnut.

I'm reminded Greggs exists at Riverside, and they can fulfill my needs but I'm not far enough into my journey to stop yet, by the time I reach the one opposite WH Smiths there's a bit of a queue outside because everyone starting shifts is grabbing a coffee too so I carry on, I get to the one next to Game and there's no queue and I'm far enough along in my journey that I feel I can break it for coffee & a doughnut so I grab those going on to my destination.

All 3 Greggs have played a small part in that eventual purchase - if that 3rd Greggs had been to busy I might have carried on (because I'm not going into Cafe Nero if I can help it) so I probably wouldn't have gotten anything until my return journey back - but that Greggs was unlikely to be too busy because there's 3 of them to take the load of purchases.

Talking of healthy diets, what's happening to the old KFC place at Grey Fryers? Easy winner of the Most Untidy Building Site award

Some sort of garage, it has been discussed quite a bit on here in recent months.

Bit buildings sites ( which is now what it is) tend to be untidy, but at least it is going to be something by completion.

Most untidy building for me is the old job centre further up. Vandalised and graffiti on it that is beyond belief.

The entrance door was off its hinges a couple of weeks ago so some have gained entry to it and is an arson attack waiting to happen which will eat into local resources.

12 months ago when it was in reasonable condition I witnessed attempted vandalism.

Police didn't care. I raised the matter with millar sandy that the landlord may want to secure the site, I copied in the local councillor ( who did not respond).

Millar sandy did state they would look into it....nothing has been done and look at it now.

Local councils are quick to fine landlords and home owners who let properties become a mess.

What about inconsiderate business landlords.

Unusually, I agree with everything you say, Gareth. Someone has spent a lot of money on what was a derelict house next door, yet the council leave two buildings looking like they've been visited by the Luftwaffe.

Eccleshall Rd/Bristol Street is a 24hr one, Im sure it wont effect their custom.
I know for a fact that once the new one opens, any family Saturday lunchtime trips to the eccleshall road site will stop. Cramped, hard sometimes to get a parking space/table....

I noticed that old derelict house yesterday - they've done a really good job on it. Lovely house, but in an awful position.

Just been in Coffee 1. Really impressed, done a really nice job doing it out. They've opened it up at the back into what Bella Italia used as the kitchen and its spacious and done to a high standard. Love the feel of the place. Food selection is great, I had Eastern flatbread which was delicious. Good choice of different drinks.

In all fairness the buildings are not the councils responsibility, they do not own them. It is the laziness of bloody landlords. Tavern in town is getting similar.

But the council should be taking better enforcement action and fines against these folk.

Enjoying a drop of red.
I've been in Stafford's Caffè Nero once - I was appalled by the level of noise from the machinery, it was like being in an industrial boilerhouse.
I like it. My favourite place for coffee and meetings in town. Shame I can't spell it though...
