Why don't they... just...

Build more roads?

Can all the people who might have thought that once, finally understand why they don't? It's not really that difficult.

Roads are incredibly expensive, and the building of them is incredibly disruptive. More of them is arguably better, but you have to accept that there will be an huge amount of disruption on many levels to make more of them. Most of the time you are trying to integrate new roads into the existing system, so complex ways of bringing new flows into the stream have to be built in to the roadworks that will bring it all on line. It will be messy.

And then the people drive their cars on the new system anyway, and they fill up with the kind of capacity you were trying to avoid in the first place.

So you have to think anew...

It's cut my journey time by twice as much

And half again

So almost treble the time

It took to take

Before the improvements

Delays

And roadworks

So in conclusion

Just imagine

People working locally

Less local travel needed by car

More business in the town

More money generated locally

More money spent locally

They knew what they were doing

They get paid more so they must know

Every faith in the management

Just imagine

Work...

It is not unimaginable that within our lifetimes, so much of what we now do with real people will be done without them, that it will make many, many people redundant.

There will still be many, many people.

And they will be redundant.

Not in the respect of being 'otherwise unoccupied', but genuinely redundant, like being 'no longer needed or useful'.

Luckily we have people like Jacob Cream-Cracker at the heart of Government who have the interests of all of us at heart.

Irony
The new road would have got me to work a bit quicker, walking, biking or driving.
I don't have that work as somebody in India now does it over the internet. It might be a load cheaper but they do it 3 or 4 times to get it right.
Meanwhile, I still have those skills and a lot more but companies don't take people like me on.
Efficiency!! #butthatsforanotherthread #changedirection

Multi-million pound Stafford road scheme reaches next milestone
By Dayna Farrington | Stafford | Transport | Published: Less than an hour ago

The Stafford Western Access Route is driving towards its next milestone with demolition works poised to start making way for a new roundabout.

Vacant buildings on Doxey Road, formerly the home of Stafford-based company Saint Gobain, will be pulled down changing the landscape of the town.

And on November 8 a temporary roundabout will come into use on Doxey Road providing access to Stafford Borough Council offices and Sainsbury’s car park while the current access closes for the new roundabout to be built.

The buildings to be demolished include an office block, gatehouse and former factory.

How the Stafford Western Access Route is set to look from above
All the masonry will be crushed and used within the Stafford Western Access project.

Once built the enlarged roundabout, adjacent to Doxey Road car park and the former Saint Gobain site, will link up with the new route.

Councillor Mark Winnington, Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for economic growth, said: “Work is now well under way on this long-awaited project which is vital for Stafford’s future growth.

“This is a significant milestone – changing the landscape off Doxey Road by removing vacant industrial buildings.

“Next month also sees a change in the configuration of Doxey Road and the Sainsbury’s temporary access arrangements.

"We will be keeping in contact with local residents, businesses and partner organisations throughout the scheme.”

The new route will link the A34 Foregate Street at Madford Retail Park to the A518 Newport Road Castlefields junction.

The road will help improve traffic flow in Gaol Square, Newport Road, Station Road, Chell Road, Foregate Street and Doxey Road.

It will also include improved conditions for bus services, pedestrians and cyclists, as well as environmental benefits through the redevelopment of areas of derelict land, say the council.

The new road is being funded by developers and with £15.5 million secured by the Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Enterprise Partnership through the Government’s Local Growth Fund.

A full closure of Doxey Road will need to be put in place for one weekend in early 2021 and again for four weeks just afterwards.

Please remember us mere mortals that are having to live through these roadworks daily.
If we haven't got the thump, thump, thump of the pile driving throughout the day, there is a generator going all night.
I did my job on approximately 1½hrs sleep Thursday.

I like the big picture … very video gamish. I half expect to see Lara Croft coming running down from the right being chased by a Tyrannosaurus !! (After all, it is Doxey …. ):teef:

At which point all that traffic will go through castle fields onto the Newport road. Which will be fun....

Grand Theft Auto is far to violent and inhuman for me.

At least in Tomb Raider you get to shoot lots of small fluffy animals with an MP5. :buddy:

Enjoying a drop of red.
You have never experienced the newport rd rail bridge, station road, tenterbanks and braad st bottlenecks then :)
I'm not convinced that this will do anything but move the bottle neck elsewhere for those attempting to navigate to or from the Northern part of town. And it certainly won't do anything for those trying to get past Tesco in order to reach the more temperate Southern and Eastern climes.

I do hope, however, that I am proved very wrong on this, once everything is up and running.

For several months now I have been hearing someone banging a drum for long periods of time and it is always the same rhythm.

It sounds like it coming from the direction of Sainsbury's car park (I'm at Greyfriars Business Park, when I have been hearing it).

Any ideas?

What happened to the 'drummer' - subject of the thread 'Someone Banging a Drum' ? Was is Mark Binnington 'banging on' about the proposed Western Access Route ?
Whoever it was they've been well and truly usurped by 'Someone Banging a Pile Driver'

Incidentally, whenever I hear a pile driver in action it always reminds me of the graveyard acid trip scene in the film 'Easy Rider'
