Term time absence

Having spent the last 10 years of my working life working in a secondary school I'm saying nothing on this one … except, there's two sides to every story, and some of those 'little darlings' would have been on the business end of a .50 calibre machine gun if I'd had my way. (Which, sadly, I didn't.) :heyhey:

You don't know anything about the .50 calibre machine gun that was stolen from a tank at Duxford Museum a few years back - during opening hours?

Meanwhile, to change the subject from maths, you have three hours -

I remember a lad complaining about the questions in our mock* O Level physics exam. The teacher brought in the equivalent exam that he had sat about thirty years before and put a question on the board - along the lines of "What is the likelihood that the next breath you take will contain a molecule that was in the dying breath of Julius Caesar?" - to be done with just the information in your head...

It's about 50/50, apparently.

* We now have to call them 'pre-public', for some bizarrely unimportant reason - maybe because somebody thinks that 'mock' will get pupils to think they are some sort of joke..?

My dear old Ma has been in the exam marking business for many, many years.

Every year for most of those ^years i have been given an insight into the changing face of expected Mathematics competency.

My personal favourite was one from the GCSE era - probably 10 years or so ago - that simply had a picture of an hexagon with the...

Q: Name this shape

This was, quite unbelievably, a two mark question.

The reason i remember it had the potential to garner two marks was because my favourite A: was 'Sexygon' - for which the student received one of the possible two marks available, simply because their answer had an 'ex' and the element '-gon' in it.

Needless to say, i have been unable to see an hexagon without involuntarily thinking it a 'sexygon' for at least the last decade.

school attendance is the bane of my life.
Two children both under the educational welfare officer for poor attendance.
One has had on going health problems and under investigation at the hospital where he has had to have a general anaesthetic and time off for recovery which triggered his involvement with educational welfare officer
Child two is autistic with school related anxiety. He is a teenager, gone are the days when I could carry him to the car and fasten him into his seat and drag him to school kicking and screaming. His battle to attend school starts the evening before. Panic attack, silent tears, distress, physical symptoms of ill health like nausea, stomach ache, head ache etc. I start the painful process at 06.30 trying to prepare him. Some days it works, with almost no issue, other days there is no chance. No amount of threats, negotiations, consequences, shouting or loving will work. He won’t go. The worst days are the days I eventually get him there after hours of negotiations, tears and upset and he arrives in school late, but gets there and his day book is stamped with block capital red ink LATE. That’s the worst, punishment for fighting his demons and going. Followed by educational welfare officer telling him his school day starts at 9.00. Nope, his day started the night before.

All of this I hear you. My eldest ended up in pupil referral unit (pru) as her school to 'help' her. She was stuck in there with the I don't give a shit teens, the pregnant teens/ mom's, kids with mental health issues, that included her. All of these were half heartedly educated and her school life was still pure hell given her anxiety etc and now she carried the stigma of where she was at school to go with it.

Second child has health issues resulting in twice yearly spinal operations with time off to recover each time, we received multiple warnings regarding her attendance levels.

Third child has Autism, luckily this was picked up early and we got her into special school, she started school when she was 3 however and used to fall asleep so ended up being sent home several times. they complained about her attendance, I pointed out to them she was not yet 5 and they were the ones sending her home. They also complained about her being late, I told them to take it up with the school bus service. Since she moved schools all has been great.

Youngest child loved nursery but just couldn't gel with her new school and after 6 months had become impossible to get into school. She would cry, be sick, have stomach pains and when I did get her there we would be told off for being late.

By this point I'd had enough of the schooling system so took her and the second eldest out of school and I teach them myself, we do things differently when we like and how we like. We are all much happier and no educational welfare or the government poking their noses in.
