How many carnivores does it take to change a light bulb?

None. They prefer to stay in the dark!

How many vegans does it take to change a light bulb?

None. Everybody knows they can't change anything.

just read an interesting blog about vegan food this bit was particularly interesting, especially when it comes to E numbers.

Here’s a list of the less obvious animal ingredients that are NOT vegan:

  • Casein – a milk protein
  • Lactose – a milk sugar
  • Whey – a milk by-product
  • Collagen – from the skin, bones and connective tissue of animals such as cows, chicken, pigs and fish
  • Elastin – found in the neck ligaments and aorta of bovine, similar to collagen
  • Gelatine/gelatin – obtained by boiling skin, tendons, ligaments and/or bon sans is usually from cows and pigs
  • Aspic – industry alternative to gelatine; made from clarified meat, fish or vegetable stocks and gelatine
  • Lard/tallow – animal fat
  • Shellac – obtained from the bodies of the female scale insect tachardia lacca
  • Honey – food for bees, made by bees
  • Propolis – used by bees in the construction of their hives
  • Royal Jelly – secretion of the throat gland of the honeybee
  • Vitamin D3 – from fish-liver or sheep’s wool
  • Albumen/albumin – from egg
  • Isinglass – a substance obtained from the dried swim bladders of fish, and is used mainly for the clarification (fining) of wine and beer
  • Cod liver oil – in lubricating creams and lotions, vitamins and supplements
  • Pepsin – from the stomachs pf pigs, a clotting agent used in vitamins

There are also a few food additives, i.e. E numbers, that are not vegan. So here they are so you can keep away from them too:

  • E120 – Carmine, also known as cochineal, carminic acid or natural red 4. Crushed up beetles used as red food colouring
  • E441 – Gelatine, a gelling agent made from ground up animal bone and skin, often found in confectionary
  • E542 – Bone phosphate, ground up animal bones used to keep foods moist
  • E901 – Beeswax, as the name suggests, this is wax that’s made by bees, and is used as a glazing agent
  • E904 – Shellac, glazing agent made from the secretions of an insect called the lac bug
  • E910, E920, E921 – L-cysteine and its derivatives, made from animal hair and feathers, these additives are found in some breads as proving agents
  • E913 – Lanolin, a greasy substance secreted by sheep and other woolly animals. Mostly used in cosmetics, but also used to make vitamins D3, rendering many multi-vitamins and fortified foods unsuitable for vegans
  • E966 – Lactitol, a sweetener derived from lactose, which is made from milk

A little shocking eh!

Shocking to think the numbers of animals killed each second to fill and bung into our little stupid faces.

Hope the vegan options are selling well Chris.
I'm due a visit to your D&D soon!

I remember once expressing surprise that a nation of animal lovers ate animals.

It turned out that the words 'we' and 'eat' and 'meat' and 'so' and 'couldn't' and 'give' and 'a' and 'flying' and 'fluck' and 'about' and 'certain' and 'animals' played a big part...

I haven't been The Wildwood for years but now, it's a possibility.
Ditto. We haven't been for 5 years, maybe longer. It used to be quite good (handy for where I live), but the quality (or was it the service) dropped off and we stopped going. Has anyone been recently and could let us know what it's like, please?

We used to go quite often for meals with it being within a 5 minute walk from home. But it's been hit or miss as to whether a decent meal comes out for the last few years (since the latest management moved in). Even the better meals haven't been anywhere near as good a standard as the same items in other sizzling pubs. Just seem to be served a plate full of onions with the tiniest bit of dried up chicken on and not much else. Our last meal there , a few months ago, was so bad we vowed never to eat there again until new management eventually take over.
( We had consistent tasty and large portions in a sizzling in Paignton ,The Ship, every evening on holiday last September, along with excellent service. We even commented to the manager that we wished our local sizzling was as good ! )
