The Archers

Have I missed something?
What on earth is going on with Tony?
As husband of the pious Pat and father to the mad-as-a-box-of-frogs Helen, he could be expected to be permanently miserable. But it doesn't seem to have bothered him until recent weeks. Now, whenever he speaks, I have to turn the radio off. There is obviously a cack-handedly unsubtle storyline being introduced, as is customary on the everyday story of middle-class folk. But what? Is he going to die? If so, I shan't be too sorry...although I'm not sure I could take any more of Pat's depression. I wish they'd resurrect Nigel. He was always happy. Now everyone's unhappy. Ruth is worried about the cows. Adam is worried about different cows. Shula is worried about a horse. Caroline is still fretting about a hole in the ceiling. I hope Brian has another affair. That usually cheers everyone up.

It is one of the few things that I just cannot listen to any more - what a contrived load of tosh it is these days...

Both Walter and Nelson have gone to the Green Room in the sky. Agreed, it is total tosh but it's been a part of my daily life since childhood. I couldn't possibly just abandon them. There was a time when I was living alone and freelancing. Until I found other stir-crazy freelancers meeting daily at Stephanie's, the residents of Borsetshire were starting to feel like my entire social circle.

I remember it being electrical goods - well, when driven past it in the '70s, I was assured that it 'is run by the chap that plays Walter Gabriel' - if it was a joke, then it wasn't much of one - until now, when I've just regurgitated it forty years on..

Neither of them ever spoke about Walter's secret past life as a Panzer-Grenadier, as I recall - I might have stayed listening then, it would be less unlikely than an Hindu Asian marrying the vicar...

And why is there no postman?
How do you know there is no postman?
It's a bit like the atheism thread - I don't know that there isn't, but I am unaware of any evidence that there has ever been a 'postman character' appear in the Archers - police, clergy, milkmen a-plenty, though, but, no postmen - perhaps you know different?..

Another question - What sort of mad(wo)man would put the Archers under 'Entertainment'?.

You can question my sanity but I will have no truck with any messing around with my gender. There IS a postman. Will and Ed received confirmation of the parentage of the vile George, that way. That proves the existence of a postal worker, if not actually of God.
Also, the vicar had multicultural form. And for someone who doesn't listen you seem to know quite a bit about it...are you sure you're not a closet addict?

I have no doubt that people may have letters delivered, but has a postman ever actually appeared as a character?

It's like any 'soap' - i.e., the same old shite, with a bit of topicality and you hardly have to watch/listen to have a good idea of what's going on..

Pat just wants putting out of her misery, but Ruth and Susan I would like to see suffer for a while first..

Not Linda? Personally, I aspire to growing into a Lillian-character, Someone at whom people look at askance, a swash-buckler, soaked in strong liquor and expensive perfume.

I don't actually mind Linda too much, for reasons that I can't really understand myself. Marjorie was alright and, possibly Hayley, too.

Of the blokes, I'm really struggling ....

Good observation, there. Probably true.

There are certain strange practicalities in soaps - despite the frequency of arguments, people still take it in turns to shout at each other in an organised manner so that nothing is missed by the viewer - 'Fair City' an Irish soap, had East Europeans in it, for added realism, but this was destroyed when two Russians, conspiring together on their own, had the whole conversation in English...

Etc.
