Quick report..

its gone above 45 degrees so I am now aloud outside the 'walls'..

Had the good fortune to be escorted out to the Cleaver and I have to say they have a splendid range of ales on these days ..fave was Oxford Gold out of four hand pulled real beers.. food as usual was splendid, perhaps the best pub food within a hop of the town.

getting there... because of some temporary roadworks ( 6 weeks ) the best way from Stafford is via either Haughton, Seighford or Bridgeford and then through the village of Ranton itself

A few posts under my belt
I was just looking through the forum and noticed this thread. Unfortunately the Cleaver has now shut its doors like many other rural pubs.

I have been told that butters john bee have it for sale at the moment.

It was on for £495k when it was first up for sale - not sure about now though, it's such a shame it's closed, Cathy and Trev the owners were lovely, they were struggling for a while but what finally did it was the second lot of snow just before Christmas. The council wouldn't grit the lanes and people weren't venturing out much, as you can probably imagine the overheads for a pub of that size are serious and they had no option but to close the doors.

It's really sad for us as we're seriously out in the sticks, our 3 closest pubs being the Hand and Cleaver, The Yew Tree and The Holy Bush.

We're not having much luck getting served in any of our locals anymore :(

Why can't they do half pub, half indian restaurant? I would suspect the customer base transfers both ways.

We had an Indian in the town in Ireland with a take-away business and a taxi licence. He would cook your meal, arrive with it outside whatever pub you were in and then take you home - luxury..

He also knew where most peoples' keys were hidden and would get you into the house - no matter what state you were in.

The Sergeant once told me "He knows how to get into more houses than I do".

I don't see it working over here, though..

It was pretty darn good when it first opened, a few of us went on the opening night and the food and service was spot on, we've had a few take aways since (it's the only place that'll deliver to us) and they began going down hill - each one slightly worse than the one before untill the last one - Steak my husband wouldn't even feed to the dog and the above mentioned Chicken dish.

Reminds me a bloke who used to wander into a pub in Birkenhead with shrink wrapped undated un anything joints of dead things.."Alright for meat?"
