The ten worst roads

Excellent idea, Beast.

My vote goes to Sandon Road.

A surface like the Moon, after an artillery barrage.

A completely pointless Pelican Crossing just yards from a set of traffic lights, and that I've only seen anybody use twice ( and then probably just to see if they worked ).

The traffic lights where Lotus was and where I now seem to spend a large part of my life watching them change colour for no special reason.

Another set of time-wasting lights at the end of Corporation Street where there once was a perfectly serviceable mini-roundabout, just like the one at the Four Crosses.

New streetlights inside the trees so that you get hardly any light at all from them in the summer and it's Christmas before the last of the leaves falls off.

Dodgy parking making the exit from Henry Street somewhat hazardous.

Ludricous illuminated signs on all the side roads telling you that you are now leaving a weight limit zone. Why would you want to know? Are you going to take the opportunity to load up immediately knowing that you're now safe from prosecution? And don't vehicles over 7.5 tons have to have lights on when it's dark anyway?

Oh, and, of course, the flooding.

This is just a preliminary entry at this stage, my blood is boiling! I could go on - and probably will.

( Have I spelt "ludicrous" correctly? Somehow it just doesn't look right to me. I must look it up. )

When I was little, my Dad used to drive along the Newport Road saying "this is the worst stretch of road in the town". My brother thought he said "stretchy road" and would always ask if we could go home along the "stretchy road". No-one knew what he meant so we would go along the Wolverhampton Road.
Sorry, did you want a nomination for the worst road? Corporation Street. Beyond doubt. Holes, speed humps, chiccanes, path parking, leaves all over the place, and big puddles when it rains.

I take it you mean coming out of Henry street and trying to turn right onto sandon road.

It faintly remenicent of a scene from indiana jones when he has to step out into fresh air because he cant see the stone bridge.

Big breath in, nothing coming from the petrol station up sandon road. Into first gear ......cant see anything apart from a large 4x4 parked. Quickly accelerate and hope for the best....

I live in oxford gardens, soon to be one of the worst roads in stafford. Dog poop and rubbish not withstanding there putting speed humps in now as well and there bloody big ones.

I've never had the nerve to try the right turn there, I always go up to Fonthill Road. Turning left is traumatic enough for me. They spent our good money creating this death-trap about ten years ago and the "New Road Layout Ahead" sign was there until recently, if it isn't still.

I used to live with my rents on the meadows estate. To get off the island and turn right out of there is similair to a grand prix start. Traffic comes from down GEC hill at around 40-50 mph and god help you if you try to pull out.
Just as there is a break big enough to get out something comes from out of the queensville retail park and decides your going to be his/her new hood ornament.

I dont know if this constitutes "worst road" in stafford title but as the skid marks on the road and in the underpants of the drivers will tell you its certainly one of the best places to try your 0-60 time for acceleration.

I am prepared to believe that you have made a reasonably accurate assessment of the skid marks on the road but......

I live opposite that junction, luckily we have a garage round the back though!

Same problem crossing from Sandon road across Oxford Gardens using Charnley road. Cars either side as far as the eye can see, making it single lane with a 3 foot visibility. Great! Luckily on a motorbike I can stand up and look over the cars, some bugger often parks a van there though.

I actually find that crossing quite useful and it connects two places i want to be ( the cycle path alongside beaconside road and bertellin road which connects to Oxford gardens)- whereas the one at the junction with common road always seems to be a hundred yards out of my way, whether I want to head up or down Sandon road....

Agree that getting a car out of Oxford Gardens onto Sandon Road is pretty hazardous at most points though...

I'd personally nominate the Eastgate St/North Walls one-way maze-come-obstacle-course as my least favourite bit of Stafford to drive in - although it's marginly better now some of the building work is finished and there's two lanes on North Walls again.

I have been known to move my car in the evening so its pointing up Oxford Grds so I can exit from Fonthill onto Sandon Rd, the Henry Street right turn is the most life threatening thing I do daily.....and I'm a smoker.

For anyone who does drive the Sandon Road and Ox Grds , "ITS 30 MILES PER HOUR PEOPLE".

I hate driving down Tithe Barn Road, so I don't...

Try this experiment:
Head out of Stafford, towards Haughton and close your eyes as you pass the castle (um, its probably a good idea to be a passenger when you do this).
See if you can guess when you leave the ares goverened by the Borough Council, then open your eyes.
I guarantee you'll be right every time.

top of trenchard during the week, hospital workers parked all over the place.
brow of the hill, on the junctions and on the verges. if anyone goes up there after working hours take a peek at what should be grass......... looks more like a moto x track.

I know that area well, was always a problem. What do they expect though, paying to park at work is a bit of a git so people will try and avoid it if possible. Paying to park when ill is another matter!

Try going from the roundaboot (with the island pub) down the Lichfield Road, from any direction you wish, at about 5pm

The no-traffic-light-here lane means the roundabout is always snarled up.... - and I live on the Oval - grr!!

Oh OK, i just hate the lack of filters at either end of Riverway....

However, my criticism of the traffic light timings makes me want to think of this;

agree with others, going north from lotus on the sandon rd there is more patching (a technical term) than road surface.what the hell is below the surface that requires constant repair or is it linked to the old problem of subsidence or something more sinister?
