I once started a motorbike that hadn't fired up in 5 years first time, by filling the cylinder and air intake with WD40 first.

Stupid thing won't start despite attempts (thank you Perry081064) at being jump started :(

But on the plus side, today I found that the Polish Jaffa cake's from Sainsburys that are filled with Cherry jelly are exceedingly delicious!

Try rubbing that on your points..

My free months trial Taste Card in the post. Trying it out at London House tonight. Love a bargain.

I had one, but soon realised the establishments you visit receive nothing other than your custom. They lose a lot in sales just to get you in at 2 for 1 or whatever, the card company makes the profit. I stopped using mine anywhere other than chain places.

A little black dog whilst walking to town down Lichfield Road . :)

Luckily had a disc with mobile number so was able to contact the owner. Apparently had bolted when fireworks went off.

Yes, that was me crouching down opposite Freedom Caravans, embarrassingly displaying everything I'd got in my low cut top :D, trying to stop him slipping his collar before the owner arrived nearly half an hour later.

Well done to he young lad who managed to grab him after the dog had been dodging the traffic, and read the number for me to dial.

Thanks to the lady who eventually stopped and brought a lead out of her car and made it easier to hang onto him and the kind van driver who stopped to make sure I was OK.

Doggie and his mum happily reunited. Phew!I like happy endings :)

Today I found that the shed roofing felt tacks that I have been struggling to pull out all morning in order to repair the felt, aren't shed roofing felt tacks at all....

....they attach the shed roof to the supporting beam!!!

I also found that the piece of felt I have, might not be quite long enough to repair the shed roof. Grrrrr.

I got a cheap electric stapler/nailgun from lidl and just stapled a tarpaulin from poundland over mine!
Sounds like an excellent idea for my shed roof. Ideally it needs a new one...and a bit more wall to it and a door but ..the roof is a good start lol.

... that if you accept the dimensions of the Burh as postulated by Carver, you would arrive at a perimeter wall of c. 3000ft.
If you then accept the Burghal Hidage calculations that four men per pole were required to defend a Burh, Stafford would have had a garrison of ~720 men.
It was, i have to say, quite gratifying to then find that this would seem about right if you compare Stafford to the likely size of the Alfredian Burhs that comprise the Burghal Hidage.
I have since found some evidence (via Chester) that would suggest that the Burh may well have extended down to the river in some way, which is likely to contradict Carver's premise (though of course there may well have been some sort of ancillary structure), but will most certainly provide me with a few avenues of thought that are more than likely to keep me quite contented for a few days at least.

Of course the interesting thing about that would be that it would require ~720 hides of land to support it. And that's if we accept the notion of one man per hide rather than the normal arrangement of one man per 5 hides for the fyrd - which would require a whopping 3,600 hides of land.

If Staffordshire consisted of 5 'hundreds' it would suggest that even if one man per hide of a hundred hides were called to garrison it, there would still be a shortfall - and this wouldn't take into account the garrison necessary for Tamworth which i haven't even begun looking into.

Thinking about it, i suppose that by 913 the necessary organisation could have been put in place to transpose men from other areas, but there would always remain the constraints of the hinterland to supply it with the necessary.

As Bob Marley quite rightly points out, a hungry man is an angry man. An angry man is far less likely to do his duty.

Apologies all, i appear to be thinking out loud by way of this keyboard.

I'll stop now, as today i have found that thinking out loud by way of a keyboard is probably not such a good idea. :)

... that my initial calculation was wrong. It was bigger - ~1200m (~3900ft) - suggesting a garrison of closer to 960 men.

I blame Google distance calculator (though really it was down to my half-arsed application of it).

The Posada in Wolves have this on tap if anyone develops a taste for it :)
What's the Posada like these days? I haven't been there since the refit. I hope I'm not too disappointed as the charm of the place was that it was rough around the edges. Talking of Wolves pubs, I quite the Combermere Arms - Especially the full size tree in the toilets! Mind, I haven't been there for a year or two so the Council may have had a chainsaw to it since.
