Tunes that rip off other tunes, and general sample spotting

despite being over the age of 15, i was listening to radio 1 today, and heard the new "song" by Fall Out Boy, "The Phoenix":

struck me as awfully similar to Plan B's "Ill Manors":

so i went on a sample hunt, presuming that they had both sampled the same song.. turns out i was right, as i unearthed this (which is pretty good, imo):

now, sampling a tune is one thing, but listening to the above one can't help but feel that Plan B did more than a little "borrowing" in this instance.. the chorus is almost exactly the same, in terms of rhythm, cadence, etc!

anyone else got any examples of flagrant "let's rip off this tune by johnny foreigner lock-stock-and-barrel cos no-one will ever notice"?

I don't know about ripping-off but Daft Punk are quite the sample masters.

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger

Is a re-worked/speeded-up/re-vocal version of

If you are looking for the king sample then six seconds of drumming on this track a 1:27

Known as the 'Amen Break' appears on over six hundred tracks by virtue of people sampling the tracks that have sampled it.

wtf - i always thought of daft punk as meticulous producers, who wrote all of their stuff pretty much from scratch.. obviously, the odd sample here and there, but i can't believe "harder better faster" was such a blatant rip-off! nice post, biggie, this is exactly the sort of thing i was talking about :)

i used to be a drum & bass dj, so know all about the amen break ;)

where is the best/most bizarre place you have spotted it? i was quite surprised when i first saw futurama, and heard the amen break in the theme tune!

Probably the oddest was the theme for Futurama, which itself was a sample of this,

One of my favourites, Squarepusher - Come on my selector

**Warning this video is a little odd as it was directed by Chris Cunningham**

love that tune, haven't heard it for years! i'll resist listing my favourite amen rinse outs here, as it will fast derail the thread lol..

Back to the rip-offs then and back to Daft Punk :)

Daft Punk - Robot Rock

Is a hack of;

Breakwater - Release the beast

Daft Punk are so good they sample themselves!

Daft Punk - Aerodynamic [daft punk remix]

Takes a lot from;

Daft Punk - One more time

But wait...there's more!

'One more time' has a lower BPM sample from

Eddie Johns - More spell on you

There is a link on that youtube page to a guy who shows you how it's done

How do I edit this?
I was startled to note the similarity between this composition of mine from the early days of .44 pistol (btw why doesn't the forum support soundcloud embedding?), and this by Hanni El Khatib:

I actually seriously considered talking to a lawyer myself for a little while, but then I remembered that I may not always be as original as I like to think....

From Wikipedia

When the similarities between ["I Want a New Drug"] and the theme song of the 1984 film Ghostbusters were heard, Huey Lewis sued Ray Parker Jr. for plagiarism, claiming that Parker had stolen the melody from "I Want a New Drug". Lewis had been approached to compose the main theme song for the film, but had to decline because of his work on the soundtrack for Back to the Future.

WTF is going on?

I post a tune ("Ghostbusters") that rips off another tune ("I Want a New Drug"), as per the thread title, and just because I quote a mashup to illustrate the point, the post gets moved to the mashup thread.

Many apologies! When you made the original post, there was no accompanying explanation, so I moved it to the "Mash-up..." thread since that's what it was. Now, with your explanation adding context, you're quite right, it belongs in here. Sorry for the confusion!

OK - thanks. I later realised my first post was a bit obtuse but thought others may have known this piece of plagiarism better than me (I only found out about it about 6 months ago.)
