TV Licence debate.

Threatening letter number 1 from Capita, since cancelling my license due to not using it at all...

Via email, saying my direct debit (that their site told me to cancel, because support is being slow) needs to be re-activated or they might cancel my license (yes please) or take me to debt collection (bugger off)

Absolute dregs of humanity, wouldn’t be surprised if someone turned up with a bat and threatened to break my kneecaps. No wonder so many people pay it unnecessarily.

Edit - A bespoke thread seems like a good idea...

Had a visit about 2 years ago, they insisted owning a TV meant I owed them. We had a discussion, he lost interest when he realised I didn't care, never seen them since. Letters go straight into recycling unopened, but again not seen one in ages.

I stopped having a telly in 1983. It took about thirty years for them to slow up the pursuit.

"Why does nobody come round to find out why I don't have a shotgun licence?"

"Have you got a shotgun?"

"No, but I'm thinking of getting one.."

Enjoying a drop of red.
The only live TV we ever watch is (occasionally) the news, the footy, F1 and the bikes. None of them has anything to do with the BBC and I pay a lot of money for the privilege of watching them.

I don't watch the BBC at all in fact, so why the hell should I have to pay them for the crap they produce?

Have to say I watch the BBC a lot. BBC4 in the main and good dramas on 1 and 2. All for the price of one pint per week.

How is that expensive ?

But, each to their own.

The only BBC stuff I can remember watching in the last 5 years was old stuff they'd sold to Dave. I've not sat and watched TV in the living room in probably 5 years!

Then you should have watched 'Pluto, back from the Dead' on BBC2 last night. Drama, science and gob smacking wonder with NO advertising. Well worth the price of a pint.

It's a pointless expense if you don't watch it.

We scrapped the TV licence last year and just use Netflix.

TV Licence people were an absolute pain - despite me emailing to say I wasn't going to renew they send out some bloke who put a rather threatening note though my letter box.

That's where your money is going - to pay some poor person to knock on doors and stare through your front window!!

I have some slight dealings with them now about an empty house. They seem a lot less offensive and aggressive than there were through the 1990-2010 period. I got as far as reporting them to Trading Standards over the misleading threats they were issuing (although, they, of course, just ignored me).

Capita.
The same shower of shit that are responsible for screwing anyone with a disability out of any form of benefit. How those bastards sleep at night is beyond me.

Paid our licence monthly a few years back, the monthly rate was quite high so we ended up being well ahead of ourselves about 18months in fact. Then we had issues and couldn't pay. Took them 3 letters to not only 'revoke' and cancel our license that we'd already paid for but set a collection agency on us to recover the debt that had not yet been incurred. Didn't help, we still couldn't pay but we paid all the previous money for nothing.

Nothing poor about them, they’re aggressive assholes who have been known to falsify reports as they get money every time they catch someone and sign them up
The guy I saw insisted they got no commission, we ended up discussing kodi add ons and the best vpns for American Netflix.

Do you still have a TV or just a laptop?

I'm interested in this BBC stuff, it's theft, on a grand scale. In no other area are you forced to pay for a service to your home that you don't want or use. Gas, electric, water, land-line, all can be cancelled if unused.

Just don't pay it, as long as you don't watch live transmissions it's fine. I use Netflix mainly so not live, can't be touched.

You are now required to have a licence to watch stuff on BBC iPlayer, even if it's not 'live'.

Other non-live stuff is still licence-free, I believe.

No one is forced to pay the license fee. If you don’t use BBCs services, don’t pay it. Its not a tax or a subscription.
During lockdown I am watching less and less live television and more streaming. It will change and as I still use the BBC I happily pay. I stress, if you don’t use the BBC at all, don’t pay.

This isn't true.

This website might clear it up. It's very hard to avoid. We are in the outrageous situation that watching sky sports, a subscription channel means I still need to pay the BBC a licence fee. How can that even be legal :(
