There was an Virginmedia engineer at the bottom of Greylarch this morning on my way to work - right near to where Severn Trent are doing works....... wonder if something's been damaged.

Just come back on :yay:

With the feeling that it was never, ever going to come back up anytime soon, was beginning to make plans to cart my printer over to Worcester and print my holiday documents off at sons house when I take him back down for work later. Hope it stays on now.....

I noticed them on my way down to Aldi this morning, while it was still off. Also wondered if those digging the pavement up by the bus stop on Cannock Road the last couple of days had gone through some cables.

I used to do some work for a local plant hire owner - on one occasion, one of his operators was just leaving as I arrived. "That is the best digger driver in the world", I was told, "I would pay him anything, but don't tell him that!".

The chap couldn't read or write and wasn't too good at speaking, but his skill was legendary - on one occasion, they were trenching along the side of a country road, when he lifted the bucket out and declared "Cable!". "There's nothing on this side of the road, it's only a root. Just pull it out", he was told. He replied "Cable" and folded his arms. So, they had no choice but to hand-dig round it - and discovered an 11,000 volt cable that the paperwork said ran down the other side of the road.

Can't even ring to find updates now with the landline being off ( and not paying a fortune on my mobile to sit in a queue!)

Can't do much internet stuff on this stupid phone !

Just collared the Virgin bloke at the box down the road as he was fixing it, and as he told me it's back on now. Going very slow though, so getting important stuff done and printed before it goes again....

Pipes & cables can move a significant distance in the soil, so location isn't an exact science, but they don't move that much. Original records are very variable which is the problem. BH used to work for Eastern Electricity and one of her jobs was to notify contractors of the location of cables. One day chap she knows phones and asks the location of any cables in the street where they are about to start work. Conversation then goes something like " There is an 11,000 volt cable crossing the street" "Where" "The person who recorded the installation located it as being 3 metres in front of the red Ford Sierra. Are there any red Fords in the street?" "No" " In that case be very carefull and let us know when you find it". The two then burst into laughter.

All sorts of people can produce stupid locations, the most important Romano-British hoard (gold/silver etc) was recorded by the 19th century antiquarian who found it as being located "in the field with three haystacks".
