VirginMedia 20Mb Broadband

I've recently upgraded to 20Mb BB with VirginMedia. I reckon I was better off on the 4Mb package as I actually got 4Mb DL speed. I also think NTL did a better job (I'll be posting in tech rant thread shortly). After upgrading 2 months ago, I've run several speed tests at different times of the day. The fastest I've have managed is 2Mb DL & 190Kb UL. I've read of people getting a higher UL than DL.

Also, for this last fortnight the connection has been dropping out numerous times a day.

VirginMedia should be sending me a new modem soon, they have just realised the old NTL:home modems can't handle 20Mb.....Fools

Just thought I'd post this in case anyone else is having the same problems.

Perhaps we could have a thread for members to post their internet speeds.

I've been using http://www.dslreports.com/stest for speed testing.

Here's one I did today http://www.dslreports.com/im/34863712/6541.png"></a>

Absolutely crap.

Has anyone heard anything about bandwidth capping by VirginMedia?

I'm not on 20meg, but I've noticed loads of outages in the past month or so. Last night was fairly bad, too. I did also hear that although they don't cap in the traditional sense as others do (i.e. limit downloads to 4gig a month), once you have downloaded a certain amount, your speed is restricted.

Hum - we had an outage for a few days last month, and I've noticed it stops for a few minutes every so often. Think I've posted about this before.

It'd be nice to have a facility that tells you how much you've downloaded over a given time period. There doesn't seem to be a way to do it, short of a high-end router or a load balancing server.

I'm finding it's still better than BT Broadband, though.

I hope this works "details of traffic management" another name for capping, can be found here

edit, the missus says the tv went off tonight, she had to unplug the box to reset the cable tv, and I've noticed it pixelating quite a bit too.

It's all breaking down, doom, we're all doomed, without tv theres only alcohol left, oh well it's not all bad :pint:

Crash all you like, lilaclady, that's what the forum's for :)

Well, I suppose they're not really comparable, cos BT's ADSL and Virgin's cable. My memories of BT are mainly of the fact that we seemed to hit or go near the cap quite often and it felt slower than the cable seems to be. Granted, they probably aren't as bad as I made out.
@BT's legal team: Will that do? :)

I've heard Orange are rotten. Have a google.

I'm with age'd parent on the TV - it keeps pixellating, the box keeps crashing (when I left this morning, the box was convinced the time was 16:34) and the whole box system seems terribly badly designed. Not to mention the EPG has a habit of not working.

I'm on Orange and they've been fine. In fact they were super helpful in moving our account over from our one in Liverpool. We had all manner of problems with NTL when I used to be a student so we were keen not to go back with them, also decided we didn't need a new phone number and didn't want cable telly (There's enough rubbish on Freeview).

In our defence - we didn't choose Orange, we were orginally on Free Serve, the Wanadoo and now Orange.

We are in an area of Stafford that hasn't got cable so ended up on BT. Not had any problems though and im online all day every day.

wow.. i've just moved into my new house (from a non-cabled area in sheffield), and so far i'm well impressed with virgin! yes, i know their customer service is one of modern society's biggest misnomers, but hot damn their internet service is the bomb!

i'm only on their "L" package, yet i'm sitting here browsing away merrily, with µTorrent chuntering away at over 500k/s in the background! god bless fibre optic cable..
