Thought it be useful to point out that it seems there has been a new WEEE scheme started in Stafford from 1st April 2012. I only just noticed this on the web site, and it just so happens I have an electrical item to dispose of

Weird. Same here, although it was there an hour ago. I had the info by post the other day with various bin-related stuff.

So after reading the page, basically scrap merchants will be travelling round looking for plastic carrier bags on the road and picking them up before the council get them?

Dunno if they'll be interested in the small waste electrical items. They usually go after white goods like fridge/freezers, bikes and larger metal things.

Yep! That's what I thought after initially thinking it was a good idea!

Another thought is if the scrap metal person picks it up and then fly dumps the item if its of no worth to them, you could end up with a whacking big fine for fly tipping if the item is traced back to you.
