What I Did This Weekend - In Pictures!

I can't see how you could improve on the fantastic job you are already doing on them. They look absolutely amazing !

Thank you, that’s kind.
Yes the cakes are ok for us and for friends and I’m quite pleased with my efforts.

But, for example, with the chocolate Easter cake I don’t really know how to do smooth sides so I just do it rough.

With the cake with the roses and the little flowers on, I had to improvise.
Some flowers were put on in places to cover up the cracks in the icing, and I had to put leaves all round the bottom of the cake to cover up the mess.

And although the 9 roses on the cake look ok, I had to make three times that amount to get some decent ones.

I just need more practice and some tuition. It’s fun trying though.

Do you use Youtube @Carole ?
There is a lady on there called Ann Reardon, her channel is called How To Cook That. She's brilliant. Shows you how to make the most of a disasterous cake fail, loads of stuff.

If you do need someone to take your own disasters off your hands, give me a private message, I can find my way to Bednall ;) xx

That made me smile, but I will definitely look out for that.

I’m ok with the actual cakes, people seem to like them, they usually taste good.

Its the decorating of them that I’d like to improve on.

Anyway, the word on the street is that you do a fabulous lemon drizzle yourself so I don’t think you need my leftovers.

EPAS fitted. Strangely after yesterday's constant hassle it all went like a dream today. Drive out for the Mrs to judge just how light she wants it (which is very, very light!) and make the necessary adjustments. Fortunately it's a speed sensitive system so it weights up nicely above 15mph so we both end up getting what we wanted out of the system.

Haven't made cakes for several years now but my Devil's Food Cake was chocolate coated and I always ended up with a rough finish. Gave up worrying after umpteen people had asked how I managed to get that lovely rustic finish.

I fixed this clock a couple of years ago, not that I can remember what I did - probably just a clean up job, I think. This time, the leaf spring suspending the pendulum has failed - fair enough, it's probably of 1950s vintage.

Here we can see, in the second picture, the 0.02mm shim steel that I've used for the new leaf and, by the nuts that hold the cover on, the bits of the broken leaf.

This clock is of Soviet origin and is owned by the same person as the Red Chinese clock of a couple of weeks ago - I wonder if he also has some interesting radio equipment?

Not just this weekend but the culmination of many.

Finally we have a function greenhouse in time for the expected frost this evening.

Flowers at the front, veg further back and spuds in the buckets. Other side will be planted out in the near future and I’ve got almost as much started in the potting shed.

May have gone a bit OTT this year but I’m really enjoying it.

Job for next weekend, clean all the windows.

It's certainly worth cleaning the inside of the glass now, before it gets obstructed.

If you get fed up after that, you could justify leaving the outside until the autumn - a bit of 'obscurity' may even be welcome, as the sunny weather (hopefully) arrives.

Took the car to work today to give the new Epas a work out. No problems whatsoever. However, on the return journey I left work with the full complement of four cylinders but by the time I reached Gnosall only three were left. Fortunately it turned out to be nothing more than a dodgy plug and a new set of plugs has restored the engine to the full majesty of 4 cylinders and 47bhp.
