Star Wars was a major part of my childhood, not just the films but the toys too. It was the first and only franchise I was actually interested in, and I still have a lot of the toys at my mums! The thing is, it was from my childhood. The effects were groundbreaking and the sheer size of the film was immense - back then. In your childhood it was already old hat, I'd be suprised if you did feel anything like what I do for it.
This.
note that this isn't automatically true.. i'm the same year as you, and i hate all the star wars films.. dunno why - i'm a geek and a sci-fi fan, but for some reason i never watched the films growing up, so my only experience of them was as an adult, when i saw them for what they are (i.e. shit)..

Do you like Star Trek?

Of course its not a cast iron guarantee though, no fad is. When I was about 12 all the kids liked watching oiled up men in tights roll around on the floor together, but I hated WWF.

fo' realz.. well, i don't like TOS, but i used to love TNG and voyager.. i watched DS9 for a bit then realised it was gay.. i even thought enterprise was pretty good (apart from the awful intro music)..

Is that a Moomin?
I really enjoy some films like Dark Crystal, labyrinthe and Legend which my friends swore blind were the biggest pile of AhAh since nellie the elephant unloaded.

Starwars? Well you can colour me unimpressed tbh. Nothing Lucas ever dreamed up was a cool as the games I used to play with the actions figures.

Darth Vader ( in asthma voice) Princess Leia do you want to play on the swings with me?
Princess Leia ( high squeaky voice) Yes please, let go to the park

Both WEEEEEE WEEEEEE this is fun
My childhood was a strange and lonely place

How can you not find sweaty overgrown thugs performing fake choreographed fights entertainment? The gripping stories, the fearce competition, the intensity of not knowing who was going to win......

I used WWF as a good method of deciding who I would and would not associate with when growing up. Well any 'wrestling' really. Steroids FTW!

I watched Legend again over christmas. And you have the temerity to call Star Wars shit? This was just Ridley Scott's 2 hour, big budget wank fantasy. It's an entire film consisting of Mia Sara looking teary eyed and drifting round in snowstorms. Jesus.

And it's got Tom Cruise in, so it must be bad.
And the soundtrack is painful.
And that's to say nothing about a truly, truly woeful script, poorly acted (oh, wait, it's got Tom Cruise in it.)

No, no, no, I won't have it. Ridley Scott should be farking ashamed of himself.
The make-up was good, I'll give it that.#

How's that song at the end go? It's something like:

'Legends should be there for each other.
Teaching us to be good, for goodness sake'

Bah.

Labyrinth though. Jennifer Connelly, Muppets and a soundtrack by Bowie? And it's got Bowie in it (actually that may not have been the best idea)?! All kinds of awesome.

Both made the same year. Unbelievable.

Actually, can anyone tell me a good film with Tom Cruise it? Except for possibly Magnolia?

Edit: feck, feck, feck. Hmm. Swear filter.

One of the character's makeup was based on the face of Keith "Rolling Stones" Richards, IIRC.
The R1 DVD had a different soundtrack by Tangerine Dream on it.

That's all I know about that film. :)

Ah, Labyrinth. *sings* What kind of magic spell to use? Slime and snails or puppy dogs' tails... Great soundtrack. :)

When I was young, I loved The Never Ending Story ... watched it millions of times - danced around to Limahl !!

THEN I watched it the other day, telling my kids they had to watch it .. ' cause it was soooo good' but unfortunately watching it after all these years made me realise what a pile of crap it was

Neverending Stoooory ahaaaaahahahhhhhh My god that wolf thing sh*t me up when I was a kid although I did wonder why he called his horse Artex? Was it a particularly rough ride?

Neither my best or worst film but I watched Taken last night and that is a superb film, highly rated. Especially the the infiltration of the boat at the end of the film, its brutal!
