Where the Flip are the javelins gonna land? Rowley Park football pitch

E&S today, planning permission applied for in the middle of Rowley Park's Athletics Track! Don't fancy digging the Javelins and Hammers out of the concrete under the Asto Turf! ;) If it gets passed, I am sure they can re-position it outside the track area, plenty of grass now the cricket pitch appears to have gone by the by!

I help to coach with cannock and stafford athletic club which trains at rowley park 4 nights monday to thursday and weekends in the summer. It seems to me that athletics will be pushed out to make way for a synthetic pitch which the council will want to rent out in the evenings to pay towards it's cost.
For the life of me I can't understand why the council wants to ruin a facility which the town should be rightly proud of. As Gone2seed says where are the javilin and discus going to land, you would have to fence a large area of the park, this is not going to happen and the council should come clean with their plans
I would have thought there would be ample space in rowley park or at riverside to site an artifical pitch.
Tonight we had at least 40 youngsters of all ages training in the rain, and we moan about our youth having nothing to do. It is great to see the enthusiam of the youngsters of all abilities and with the olympics next year we can see more demand for athletic facilities.

Maybe the Borough Council realise that football is the most popular sport in the world and they need an all weather facility to cater for this? After all, they kicked football out of the new leisure centre so people who had played at the old Riverside Centre for years had to find somewhere new.

But as you say andy, they could site the artificial pitch elsewhere in Rowley Park.

I'm hoping if this pitch does get built, it will be one of the new style artificial pitches which has chopped up car tyres as a base and therefore has 'give' in the surface and is far better to play football on and doesn't feel like you are playing on a beach.

I hope they really think hard about this; as Pie Green at Cannock is now closed, and a replacement has not been built! Cannock and Stafford has a good history in the heavy throws, and Javelin, quite a few athlete's representing the County, Area, and Nation!

Lesson, read the WHOLE article before rushing to post

On about 3G, http://www.ambsports.com/html/pitches.html?gclid=COik0Ln_1qsCFSIhtAoduGHXPg

Relocating the throwing cage in the Park! They might not need to move the Shot Put area, as the gravel landing zone is well outside the current pitch, but the Javelin and throwing cage, (For Hammer & Discus) would be relocated within the park. The bit they might have a problem with is increasing the lighting for night matches; they are preposing, to augment the current 10m high lights with 15m ones for the pitch. They say they won't be used till 9.30 at night, but I think the footy won't be happy, and increasing the floodlights, for the powerful members of the population, who back on the Park, won't want the lighting increasing, no matter how late it is switched on! Apparently the FA have said, having at least one third generation pitch in the Borough is a priority! The Council looked Wildwood, and Woodlands Road, but plugged for Rowley. It's gonna cost £800,000, but some money will come from the sale of a Bungalow in the grounds.

I expect loads of objections from the near neighbours, just don't hold your breath! They certainly need to sort the parking out, as when the kids play on Sunday, they currently have to park overspill on the grass as they do for any major event, eg Xcountry.

Don't know whether it was me or the article that got it wrong, but apparently the lights will go off at 9.30 PM! & the park will be open for through pedestrian traffic till then, so anti-social behaviour for neighbours might increase. :( The throwing cage is proposed to be re-located where the kids football is carried out, on the old cricket pitch. I am sure oodles of objections will have been be registered, (these are now shut!) so don't aim to book the 3G pitch for anytime soon, and I reckon the council will have to look elsewhere for their much needed artificial pitch. We shall see!

Anyone heard the latest on this development? As a local resident I had hoped that I may be informed about the developments as they went along!

Thanks river', my lads will be happy, but bit of a surprise to me, as I expected loads of objections from the high powered members of the Rowley Community! So that looks like a load of development, which will include the grassed area of the old cricket pitch where the kids footy currently takes place.

Its worth taking a look at the file in open access. Most of the objections were pretty half hearted. i think the old cricket pitch area is just going to stay as mini football pitches. All the plans are online....

Still no definative answer to the question at the start of this thread!:xd: We have had a Tarmac strip Javelin run up, a cage (without the netting! ) for Hammer & Discus since October2012; but no sign of when the landing area being marked or flattened.:ohno: As I have already said, can't see we will never have a national record at Rowley as the potential landing area doesn't look long enough to me! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_records_in_athletics
What are they waiting for? If you are a thrower (or the partner, friend or parent of a thrower) you must be so frustrated! the facility is sitting there but you can't flippin use it! I believe that The town has some very good throwers, and they to go outside the Town, (Wolverhampton, Stoke, ect) to throw an implement!:ohno:
