I'm going to be spending some time in hospital and want to get myself a device i can use to access social media, internet and play games. It needs to be light weight and uncomplicated as I'm a little technically challenged. As far as budget goes i think around the £100 mark. Any suggestions?

If the hospital has public WiFi then look at a Tesco Hulu, if the hospital doesn't have public WIFI you would be looking at something 3/4G enabled and that would be very expensive.

That's the one for some reason i always spell it wrong, but as far as i no it is not 3 or 4 G so make sure before you buy it or any other tablets without 3 or 4 g that the hospital does have public WIFI or you will have wasted your money for what you want it for. If the hospital does not have public WIFI you would be looking at high end tablets or a smart phone plus a data package.

When tesco brought out the hudl2, they were selling off their hudl1s for £79 which is a reet bargain - don't know if they've got any left* but it's worth a look at that price, it's a very good piece of kit.

tek-monkey recently posted a link for a refurb nexus @ £49, didn't he? Also worth a look*.

Without wifi it would be a bit pointless but you'd still be able to load it with games to pass the time.

*Edit - just looked, sold out

Could use a MiFi to get round the hospital's expensive wifi. 3 have them on 1 year contract or pay as you go, Tescos have a 3 mifi on a pay as you go.

Enjoying a drop of red.

The problem with that is that a fair number of areas in the hospital are dead zones as far as some/all the cell networks are concerned. It would be a pity to spend good money on a Mifi only to find you were in one of those dead zones.

Although, ward staff might be able to give advice on that as it's bound to be a question that has been asked before (assuming you can find any ward staff not totally rushed off their feet of course).

I dont know if you already bought something but my son got (from carphone warehouse) an i.phone with unlimited phone, texts and internet for £29 a month all in and the phone was free.

So from that he can use unlimited social media, browse the internet etc.

What are you using to post at present - a computer/laptop?

My mobile, but I find the screen a bit little. So now I have a kindle and I'm loving it!

Ah ok. Is a cheap laptop from our very own @wmrcomputers and a 3/4G dongle an option? I think giffgaff do packages where for a fixed amount (say £10) top up (its PAYG) you get a decent chunk of data to use.

Are you saying you've now bought a Kindle then Peggy? Is that your intended device to use?
If so, then how much data allowance do you have with your mobile phone? Most modern phones can be set up quite easily to tether. This creates a wifi network that the Kindle would connect to so that you can use your mobile phone's data plan on the Kindle.

Having recently spent some time in The County Hospital I can confirm there's no access to wifi, unless you have your own hotspot via your mobile phone your only access to internet is the very expensive patient line system - which I don't think I saw anyone use.

I was organised, loaded my ipad / kindle app with books in one go and got @Goldilox to bring a laptop and dvds for me to watch. I got through a season and half of Deadwood and we got though half a season of Dollhouse - According to our midwife we were one of the calmest couples she's seen in the delivary suite

Yes, I got a kindle from the hubby for Christmas. I think a lap top may have been a bit heavy for me, I'm not expecting to be able to move much for most of my stay which will be in Birmingham, hopefully they may have a better set up? . Oh Withnail, my mobile is a HCT, it permanently tells make its low on storage, yet I don't have much, I don't think, on there. I'm not sure what data allowance it has....I don't even know how I would know? I'm seriously technically challenged. Sorry.
