Windows 7

LMAO :)

So, anyway, windows 7. Does it use less resources than Vista? Building a PC for my GFs son, well I'm reclaiming the old server really. Its only an AMD 2200 S754 with 1Gb RAM, am I asking too much to get 7 on it? He's used to Vista, so didn't really want to drop him back to XP.

I don't know, I haven't noticed it being more demanding but then again I have a reasonable amount of power available on both the desktop and laptop so have never really hit the ceiling as it were. I think wmr was running it on his atom based netbook / 2GB IIRC and reported no performance issues, although I presume that is with Aero and the like turned off.

Wmr will probably offer a better reply than I an for this reason.

Edit: Here are the background processes and their memory / processor usage at idle on my macbook:

Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 @ 2 GHz
4GB DDR2 Memory @ 800 MHz (3 GB Usable)
5400 rpm slow as f00k hard drive
Intel GMA gfx (runs aero beautifully)

My netbook is running it on a 1.6GHz atom processor with 1.5Gb memory and with Aero etc all running too. I'd say it's just slightly faster than Vista Ultimate but pretty much the same.

If an aspire one can run it tek I think you'll be laughing
:)

No release required today munch? ;)

Is that a single core atom? Cheers mate, much appreciated. Will get the parts together, as I just got an extra 2 weeks wages from my old job :D

Yes the Atom 1.6 GHz is a single core processor. It supports hyperthreading so the OS always shows it as being two cores and therefore many people believe it to be dual core when in fact it isn't.

For a single core, 1.5Gb ram and not so hot graphics though, I really can't grumble about how Windows 7 runs. Just give it a go - you've probably got nothing to lose in trying anyway (apart from an hour or so of your time) and I think you'll be quite impressed!
