A 26-year-old Staffordshire woman has been jailed for 18 months for selling puppies without a licence.

Investigators found 39 puppies from Esther Titterton following work by Staffordshire County Council’s Trading Standards team, along with the Animal, Plant and Health Agency, Staffordshire Police and the RSPCA.

They also found a range of false documents including vaccination certificates and Kennel Club papers that were used to convince people buying animals from Titterton about the condition and value of the puppies.
Checks later revealed the premises had not been licensed to sell pets or breed dogs.

At hearings at North Staffordshire Justice Centre and Stafford Crown Court Titterton went on to plead guilty to charges involving fraudulent trading of puppies - and was also charged with the breeding of dogs without a licence, sales of puppies without a pet shop licence and consumer protection offences.

Titterton, from the Milwich area of Stafford, was jailed at Stafford Crown Court yesterday (Tuesday April 23).
Leader of Staffordshire County Council Philip Atkins said: “Demand for fashionable breeds of puppies is always high, so it can be a very lucrative business.

"Our animal health team work hard to investigate those who are providing false or misleading information about the animals they sell, and ensure they are brought to justice.

“If anyone has any suspicions when buying a puppy, they are urged to contact their relevant district or borough council in the first instance.”

Really?

Usually in reports from Court they give the street name of the offender. I wonder why they have only given an area?

It may be because it could be a rural dwelling, rather than in a 'street' as such and it would be identified directly by further detail, such as the farm name, etc?

Good. Puppy mills are an atrocity.

KC registration means f-all these days too. I’ve spoken to quite a few people who think they aren’t stringent enough and hand them out like candy. Plenty of mills manage to get them

Breeders do have some weird naming systems. I believe it’s because everyone has to have a unique name (which the breeder suffix usually handles). Still trying to find where our cat came from...

My cat came from hades. My dog came rescued from a puppy farm. Seeing how she is makes me dislike all breeders.

It's not so much the actual KC paperwork.
A decent breeder would/should have all paperwork regarding any health issues based on the breed .
Alfie had even had his heart checked and I had a copy of the tests that was undertaken .
(CKCS usually suffer from heart murmurs later on )
There was also other health checks done and the nessessary injections administered and this is where the cost of ownership comes from.

The breeder I had Alfie from had already refused one potential buyer as she wasn't happy with them.
I think I passed her test as I wasn't interested in what she was saying at the time as I was too busy rolling around playing on the floor with Alfie and his mates :P

In all she made a small profit but in relation to her time and devotion , it wasn't a great deal really and she admitted she does it for the love of doing it.
