World Cup 2018 bid

I haven't looked into the figures but the World Cup probably wouldn't have incurred quite as high costs as the Olympics as most of the stadiums (stadia?) are already built - Old Trafford, Anfield, St. James etc - with only upgrades needed.

The Eye had a 'number crunching' that suggested a £400 million profit for SA staging the last one - and a £700 million profit for FIFA - though i don't know how reliable the figures are.

NUMBER CRUNCHING

£400m Profit made by South Africa from World Cup

£700m Profit made by FIFA from World Cup

£0 Tax paid in South Africa by FIFA on World Cup Activities, a precondition of holding it there

Perhaps if the last winners were to host it our players would get off their arses and perform next time round.
Very interesting plan, although it would mean they only had 4 years to get it sorted.

I can't wait for our hooligans to kick off though - think Putin himself would wade in an start kicking some ass :D

or even score a goal?

With the huge resources and amount of professional organisers available, four years to organise two weeks footy should be easily do-able, reckon the task looks more intimidating than it is due to bigger ££££ figures involved.
Suppose parking could be a problem at The Villa though. ;)

Can't see owt wrong with the winner hosting the next but one, so 8 years to prepare? Some countries need to build a fair bit of infrastructure, so gotta give them a chance.

Good call, we've sorted it and avoided the expense of preparing future bids. Now where's our fee?

What about drunken football hooligans in Quatar, would they be stoned (to death) or beheaded?
I think being 'buried alive' is still carried out for certain offences........

Special zones will be arranged where fans may partake of alcohol - and Israel will be allowed to play, if they qualify.

Fundamental principles are flexible, apparently, when the circumstances require it..

Obviously you have to get pissed to enjoy football, sober it just numbs the senses. Holding an alcohol free world cup would be like holding a skiing competition in eqypt.

Qatar being the venue for 2022.
Qatar was apparently the preferred venue for the Flemish.

I've tried to discover whether this rather lame joke has been replicated elsewhere to no avail. If not i'd like to bagsy it.

I think you'll find gk141054 that the "minor royal" you are talking about is not only a football fan supporting Aston Villa but is 2nd in line to the throne - so not so minor as he will at some point be King of GB.

Fair dos - I think it was actually Jenksie that coined the phrase 'minor royal'.

And 'King of GB', you say? Is there something the people of Northern Ireland should know, perhaps...?

Maybe I should have put UK not GB. I was including the Scots, the Welsh and the NIrish, even if the Scots and Welsh would much prefer to rule themselves. Until that time comes they have William as a future King in waiting.

Being a 'Fan' of Aston Villa does not a football ambassador make. I offer no alternative and stand by my original post.
Chairman of the FA is surley a nominal role? Does he make Policy? offer guidance, insight, advice? or is he a celeb rolled out for these occassions?

Future King? What happend to Charles? it could be 50 years until he is elegible if HM lasts another 20 years then C has a go.

Surley it will have become some sort of reality telly show by then? PAX Factor?
It's all about TV rights and schedules these days.

No one needs great stadia to host a world cup - look at 1966 .

What are they doing with the Stadia in South Africa now with lousey infastructure containing the population? What will Qatar do with it's 30 stadiums when the circus has left town?

look at the MASSIVE white elephant that is Wembley Stadium.

Absolute millstone around the FA's neck - late and not fit for purpose. Desparately trying to break even on a handful of games a year (half empty last month against France), trying to host Rock concerts when the O2 arena is now converted for that purpose.

Wrong location.

Think what they could have done with the millions - ten acadamy's around the UK? Schools given back playing fields or equipment/Staff grants for Football training?

Or just admit we are crap at football and put the money where we are good - It is embarrassing to keep referring to Football as our National Game when we continually fail to perform.

We have genuine world champs elsewhere: Jenson Button, Damon Hill, Mansell, Lewis Hamilton, Carl Fogerty, James Toseland, the Cyclists, Swimmers, Athletes, Sailors, Rowers and Rugby Players.

It's the Premier league funded by Murdochs millions that keeps nogger high profile in England. Nothing else.

Actually, the Qatari plan is to dismantle them once the competition ends and they will be rebuilt in less developed nations - principally in Africa i think? - which was one of the determining factors in them winning the bid.

While i broadly agree with you and think the World Cup bid was a bit of a waste of time and money, do you seriously suggest we should invest sports money into the next generation of F1 drivers? It would be interesting to see how this would be implemented in schools!

For all it's faults, football is a simple game that at the roots doesn't need much equipment and is, quite simply, the most popular sport in the world.

I'm half serious - Not really viable in Schools though is it?
Why shoudn't we have Go Kart tracks (where most F1 stars come from), Velodromes, Off road Cycle tracks, Ice rinks and more Swimming/Diving pools?

I agree that footballs pleasure lies in it's simplicity. It is coaching not infastructure which is the key.

FIFA too are to blame also for not making the bid criteria explicit - or ignoring it. How could we be so wrong? One vote!

I still think it should be hosted by the winners - if a nation are unable to do it in the four year period then they shouldn't be allowed to compete.

In all honesty are Iceland, Algeria, Wales etc ever going to win?

Nor would it ba Brazil/Argentina every year as some have suggested. Look at Spain in 2010! Every Beeb pundit was saying it was Germany's time in 2010 if they could see off Brazil with England, France or Holland as strong outsiders. Ahem.
