A disused car showroom is set to be torn down to make way for 23 new affordable homes.

Developers Bernard Taylor Partnership (BTP) have this month had their application to demolish the site, and adjacent offices, on Sandon Road in Stafford, approved.

The development will include eight three-bedroom houses, nine one-bedroom flats and six two-bedroom flats - with car parking and access roads.

In a design and access development, BTP said: "The scheme comprises a mix of houses and a block of flats, with landscaping and car parking located adjacent.

"The scheme will provide much-needed housing to this area of Staffordshire, with a tenure of affordable housing and flats to cater to a variety of customers.

"The project site is located in an area of Stafford which has in recent years undergone development with more housing being built."

A planning report by Stafford Borough Council said the work was considered 'a high quality development'.

The report added: "The dwellings are in a sustainable location and overall the proposal for affordable housing complies with planning policy.

"There would not be significant detrimental impact on the amenities of existing neighbouring occupiers or on the character of the area."

In between a car park, a builders merchants and an abandoned, run down music hall/cinema/snooker room. Lovely.

It's really crap that 'affordable' homes are now built in places like this.

Quite agree.

They need to be built in Baswich, plenty of fields round there available for such. Or repurpose the development at the old Filth HQ.

How else does an area improve if nobody is the first to develop in the area.

Much better having some affordable homes near the town centre so that people don't also need cars to add to their outgoings, and the overall congestion, or need expensive public transport than leave empty commercial properties isn't it?

Also much better to build in an area like this than take even more "green belt".

‘Affordable’ homes in a terrible place.

Why is it terrible? An affordable home is better than no home and those good folks up the Baswich end didn't want these types polluting their clean air. If I was struggling for a home I'd be very happy to live on the Sandon Road!

Edit, I see you have answered why it's crap in a later post. I still disagree. Like I said, the poor are not welcome in most areas of Stafford....see the recent planning application to reduce affordable homes in the South end and increase them in the Doxey ghetto. Note, i prefer Doxey than the posh end myself, some sort of reverse snobbery :)

Yes they should be built in Baswich. There are plenty of people who would like to stay in the area when buying their first home. There isn’t enough ‘affordable’ housing being built in the area.
