It doesn't have to be moral, just legal.

The EU prohibits member states from putting VAT on insurance, but 'we' have a special Insurance Tax to get round it.

As far as I know, VAT is charged on tampons, but not on pads, because "they" think that pads are a necessity, but tampons are a luxury.

So the Government definition of luxury is shoving a wad of cotton up your James Blunt.

I believe that that may be a red herring - does shaving equipment and materials, male or female, not actually attract the full 20% VAT?

It does & quite rightly so for such a decadent luxury item. On the other hand I might need to start a campaign to get VAT removed from genuinely essential items such as beard oil...

You're right - I looked it up, pads and tampons were both standard rate up till 2001 then both were dropped to 5%. But I can distinctly remember there being a lot of fuss in the media, about 18 years ago, about their being treated differently. I must have dreamed all that.
