A park and ride would help - part of the the old Police site in Baswich would be ideal for the south side.

Yesterday I was shocked to see going down the tixal rd just how many cars were parked half on the rd other half on the cycle path, with one car on the pavement completely covering the cycle path, how the heck do they get away with that, it's not as though you can miss the bright red lane along the road.
You're right, and the Weston Road can be almost as bad just past the hospital heading into town. That said, what does annoy me are cyclists who ride on the pavement at night with a helmet and lights on, usually going at full pelt. If you have the full gear on, go on the road!

Why do cyclists use the road when there's the cycle path for them to use on the path, thus holding up traffic even more??

So you want all the cars who would drive into town to park to drive up to Baswich and cause even more congestion to the area?

Well what's the point of building them? Certainly creating more cycle paths is not going to solve the traffic crisis in Stafford.

It's worked in Amsterdam, Copenhagen and numerous other 21st century towns and cities where traffic congestion became untenable. But those that govern their committed totally to reducing car use dramatically. The whole transport system was re-designed to prioritise cyclists because those forward thinking Europeans realised that Cycling, walking and public transport are the only way to move large volumes of people in urban areas for short journeys. Anyone who thinks otherwise is deluded and part of the problem. There are too many cars on the roads, and it's only going to get worse. If this country started seriously planning for life after the car in 10 years time we'd have a sytem to be proud of. As it is car drivers and the motor industry will continue to weild their power and in 10 years time we'll be even more gridlocked than we are now. No country in Europe is prioritising the car, they've all realised that's a backward step and are planning for significant car reduction. Until we do, then you'll all continue to moan about traffic...............ALOT and it iwll only get worse.

Less cars means safer neighbourhoods for EVERYONE, healthier air for EVERYONE, less traffic noise for EVERYONE and improved health for those who reduce their car usage. I wonder how many people who are trying to lose weight drive to their gym or weightwatchers class? It's mental. if they walked instead of driving they wouldnt need to go the gym or weightwatchers in the first place because walking and cycling keep you fit and burn calories.

But traffic in Stafford isn't that bad most of the time and as long as new developments are met with capacity improvements all will me well. Road capacity is only exceeded for relativly short periods during rush hour and m6 closures.

Exercise works out at 11% of the weight reduction formula

Reducing drink and food consumption is at 89%

No not to drive up to Baswich ! It's for the ones who drive into town and sit in queues from the Cannock Road down. Plenty of people commute into Stafford from Cannock, Lichfield etc which is why I said it would be good for South side.

Enjoying a drop of red.

People will park and ride when there is a large variety of shops to choose from, including posh shops. Hence why it works in Chester, Oxford and such places. People will go by train for the same reasons. It all boils down to a day out shopping (shudder!!).

Stafford is not like the places above. Unless people can park next to the shops they will take themselves and their money elsewhere.

Sad, but true I'm afraid.

Why cant we have some shared lanes - so maybe using bus lanes at key times for cars with multiple passengers

Cycling could help Stafford but its not without its problems, if large numbers take it up.

Copenhagen's novel problem: too many cyclists

Can there be too many bikes in a city for safety? It's not a question usually asked: the received wisdom, supported by research and backed by campaigning groups, is that the more cyclists there are, the safer the roads become for everyone. But in Copenhagen there are controversial voices coming from unexpected places.
"In Copenhagen, we have quite extraordinary problems around cycling congestion," said Aneh Hajdu, of Wonderful Copenhagen. "I don't take my children on their bikes into Copenhagen at rush hour any more. It's too dangerous and scary. I just wouldn't risk it."
It is not just the locals who are, according to Hajdu, finding the sheer crush of cyclists in Copenhagen an ordeal. "I went on a cycling trip around Copenhagen with a friend visiting from London recently, and she was terrified by the mass of cyclists and the aggressive way they behaved," said Hadju. "She found them so overwhelming that she burst into tears. She was too scared to get back on her bike. We had to put it in a taxi and drive back home."

Well that clearly not a problem that is going to effect Stafford in my lifetime, nor that of my grand-children (if I ever get any) given the rate of progress on cycling in Stafford is it!!
